littlehampton Posted July 15, 2017 Share Posted July 15, 2017 After all the comings and goings in recent weeks, a 6-0 pre-season friendly win for Town at Amersham this afternoon, sounds like an encouraging work-out for our new squad of players, under the watchful eye of Andy Leese.There are plenty more friendlies coming up, before we host Folkestone Invicta in our opening league fixture on 12th August. Next up is Chelmsford City at the QE2 on Tuesday evening.Early days, but if you did manage to get over to Amersham today, I am sure many people will be very interested to hear your thoughts and observations on which of our new signings and triallists caught your eye in particular, and generally how things are shaping up and starting to come together, a month or so before we start the new campaign. Steph1 Posted July 16, 2017 Share Posted July 16, 2017 Sometimes you wonder about the value of friendlies such as this. Town completely overwhelmed Amersham and showed that the gulf between the two sides. If the score had been more than 10-2 it would not have flattered Town. For the first 15 minutes I dont think the ball actually got into the Town half and our goalkeeper was a spectator. Chances went begging and we lacked a clinical finish even though we were 2-0 up in that first quarter of an hour. Half time it was 4-0 and as is the way with pre-season friendles the team was changed wholesale. There was a Kirby lookalike in the centre of defence who was not very mobile but commanded the back line ably though this was the time when Amersham with better finishers should have scored at least 2 and our goalie did well on several occasions. We continued to over elaborate in their half but what was encouraging in the game is that we used the flanks for better than we ever did with Bradley, our wingers getting to the by line regularly. In this number 3 in the first half stood out.I cannot give you their names as when the teams were read out "trialist" played in many positions. Chelmsford will be a far better test. Father Jack Posted July 16, 2017 Share Posted July 16, 2017 I suppose the main purpose of the game was to give Andy a chance to work on formations and shape in a non - pressurised environment. It was encouraging to see that the team kept trying to play the same way regardless of the personnel on the field BTW the Kirby lookalike was Darren Purse, our 40 year old assistant manager!
