Green played for Pools between 1969 and 1973, making one hundred and thirty seven appearances for the club.

After leaving Victoria Park, he went on to play for Carlisle United, West Ham United and Peterborough United, before a four-year stay at Chesterfield.

Green retired in 1984 after making eleven appearances for Doncaster Rovers.

His managerial career began at Scunthorpe United in 1991 and he also managed non-league club Buxton between 1994 and 1996.

A statement on the club's website read "Pools spotted his talent early on and he made a competitive debut against Newport County in September 1969 aged just 18 and by the time he hit 20 he was wearing the captain’s armband," read the message on the site.

"His performances in the heart of the Pools defence earned him a move to Carlisle United in 1973, whilst he also went on to play for West Ham United, Peterborough United and Chesterfield.

"Following his retirement from playing, he went in to management with Scunthorpe United in the early 1990s before taking on a number of scouting roles with Wigan Athletic, Derby County and latterly Southampton.

"Everyone at Hartlepool United would like to offer sincere condolences to Bill’s family and friends at this sad time."
