Byfield hoping Redditch fans will return

Redditch United manager Darren Byfield hopes his side's current league form will entice the fans back to the Trico.

The Reds made it six wins from their first eight Southern League matches with a hard-earned three points against Biggleswade Town on Saturday – a game which the United boss claimed his team would have lost last season.

Byfield said: "On another day we could have had three or four goals in the first half with the amount of chances we were creating.

"I'm not going to go mad when my players aren't scoring all their chances. They're part time players, they're not going to score at every opportunity that comes there way. I'll be more concerned in games when we don't create chances.

"Biggleswade are a very strong and physical unit and my lads did well to hold on. Last season we would have folded in the second half and lost that game, so I'm really pleased with the character they showed.

"I just hope our performances will start getting the fans back to the ground."

Much has been made over the chopping and changing Byfield made to his squad during the previous campaign, but the manager said he is more than happy with the players he now has at his disposal.

"We are 100 per cent a more settled side from last season – every week we would have new players in the side," he said. "We've now got a good balance to the squad and I don't want to lose any of the players I have.

"We are doing very well in the league at the moment, but football is a fickle business and things can change so quickly.

"It's up to me to keep my players grounded and make sure they don't get complacent. A few bad results and by next week we could end up in eighth or ninth.

"But I take nothing away from the way the lads have played so far though. They have put good performances in against good sides."
