Leiston v Enfield Town - match fred

Tally Ho

Like many others I was hoping for a better outcome yesterday evening.

However, irrespective of results I am still worried that AL continues to seem quite happy with the make up of his defence. Discounting Kirbs (until fit ) and the two 18 year-olds, on paper he has only 4 recognised defenders plus Mickey who is listed in this category. On the other hand we have midfielders and forwards galore.

If he is going to get anywhere near his points target, as previously mentioned by Steph 1, he has got to do something about this situation. Even with Kirb's return he still needs more mobility introduced across the back line. Alternatively, he will have to take a chance on one of the younger players and be prepared to give at least one of them a chance. You cannot always judge a player on the training ground and may need to see them under actual playing conditions. Who knows at least one may turn up trumps and surprise him.

Otherwise we will still be reading headings such as " Individual errors prove costly " or something similar. I have read many comments, by other contributors, basically saying that the team still appear not to know one and other. Invariable it is amongst the older players this tend happen, as they become stuck in the ways, where as younger players are more susceptible to advice and the willingness to integrate. I say this as an 80yr old. It has something to do with modern coaching methods which have at last been updated.

I think the fact is that this squad (as it stands) is not strong enough to win every game and will continue to be inconsistent. We are not a bad side.We are not a good side.We are an average side.Sometimes things click and luck goes for us.Sometimes things don't click and luck goes against us.

This is maybe acceptable in the short term as the club seek to stabilize following the departure of a manager and the whole squad in one go..But i for one am not prepared to accept this sort of mediocrity long term..Lets hope the manager can progressively improve this squad and quality of play as time moves forward.

The long and the short of it is that Andy will be judged at the end of the season. If there there is not a significant improvement in both results and style of play then he will be on his way and I dare say Darren Purse's managerial ambitions will have suffered something of a set-back.

I will, therefore, wait...and hope AL can achieve the ambitions that convinced the board he was the right man for the job.

Made a last minute decision to drive to the game last night, spurred on by the result on Saturday, the chance to see Liam make his second debut, and another new ground to tick off  - no. 103 I believe ..

It was certainly a game of 2 halves. The first half I sat with Ram and Les watching  on the halfway line, and we performed very well.  You would not think the team had only arrived at 7.15 due to traffic!

Only one change from Saturday, enforced due to work commitments, with BWC starting in place of Simon, and Sam Y also unavailable for the same reason. We created several very good chances, and after about 20 mins Joe had hardly touched the ball. The highlight for me (perhaps because I was watching from that side of the pitch) was the interaction between John K and Mickey, who linked up very well - it was bizarre seeing Mickey as the only player on the 1/2 way line when we were defending a corner at one point!

The locals behind us  were starting to get critical of their team, berating them, & cheering when they got into our half, etc. Then out of nowhere an absolutely horrendous back pass from Rumens set up their striker. Whilst he still had to finish it was an absolute gift. Leiston were playing good football, passing it out from the back, but Micky, BWC and Ryan Blake had all been pressing them well at 0-0, causing errors. The goal really gave them confidence, however. We should have been ahead at half time, or drawing at the very least.

Second half they broke early and made it 2-0. Our play from then on was sloppy - giving the ball away cheaply, not making the right simple pass, etc. The arrival of Liam with 30 to go did improve the team. I feel it gave us a real lift, and we seemed to have a lot more options in our play. He held the ball well, did some nice interplay and took a free kick well - welcome back Liam!

What I was pleased with was we kept pushing forward looking to score - we didn't give up, and created a number of potential chances. Even Darren P was making late foraging runs to try and create something!

The players came over to the goal at the end and shook the fans' hands to thank us for coming. A few of the players commented that the performance hadn't been good enough, but I do feel the effort was there and they all were clearly dejected over the result.

I think that although BWC is more mobile than Simon, we missed Simon's aerial presence - in my view, Liam gave us both when he came on and absolutely should be in the starting 11 on Saturday.

And the negatives - the usual suspects of sloppiness and misplaced passes.

Leiston were very good at playing out calmly from the back, as well as breaking quickly when our moves broke down - we do not do either of these things well.

Agree with the above comments- we don't have enough defenders and we need a QUICK centre back - Vlicu would have been perfect! With no defenders on the bench last night, had we had a defensive injury at the start we would have to have scrapped the Mickey tactic and moved him back.

New signing Calver came on later, but can't judge him on the limited minutes. As a Saffron Walden resident for the last 5 years, I have watched SW Town on occasions, and I remember him as being one of their key players in the past, albeit at a lower level, and at 26 coming up to his peak.

So 2 steps forward Saturday, then one step back last night - but performance was improved on Wingate, Folkestone, etc, team structure is being tweaked by the manager, new players are being sought. I remain cautiously optimistic. And as above pushing for the play offs remains a reasonable target in my view.

Unable to get to Saturday as my daughter has a karate tournament, and to be honest wouldn't fancy that 4h drive again (last 30 mins on the way in I don't think I saw another car on the road ... it was eerie!), but looking forward to an important game Tuesday!

Thanks RG for another informing and balanced critique of yesterdays game as seen through your eyes. I do hope your wish for the future materialises.

Also good luck to your daughter for the week end. Nothing worse than watching your own perform but doesn't it fill you full of pride that they are able to compete.
