behind-the-goal Posted December 19, 2017 Share Posted December 19, 2017 A few off-the-top-of-my-head thoughts to compare tonight against Saturday's game. One: our attack was more fluid and on-the-ground tonight (as opposed to rather static and in-the-air on Saturday). Two: Aaron looked slightly ring rusty on Saturday. Tonight, he got his mojo back. Three: Liam was brilliant at creating space for others tonight, and, despite being shorter than Simon, he was winning headers (and doing creating things with them) than Simon was on Saturday. Four: Ben W-C was tireless and really impressed. Five: Ryan Blackman came on as a sub and immediately perked things up. Following his MOM on Saturday, he is now definitely a fixture in the 1st 11. Six: I want to see Liam (as deep lying 10), Ben and Blakey in the starting line-up on Saturday. Seven: I know that won't happen unfortunately. Eight: our defence is a disgrace (nothing has changed since Saturday or the beginning of the season). Agreed that Aaron played well last night (can’t compare to Saturday as I wasnt there) and also agree that it was very refreshing to see actual football being played. I thought there was a lot more passing to the feet, a few “one twos” and keeping the ball on the ground instead of just “booting it”. I actually think a lot of this has to do with the youngster Jack Hockney who was very impressive and worked well with Aaron. I think people will agree with me as the lad got a good round of applause when he came off at around 75 mins. Actually there were three 18 year olds who started last night, one being the goalie and we still got the win and kept our record at home. I find this encouraging for the future. Defensively, yes still an issue, but let’s stay positive, we are work in progress, another league win will see us comfortably mid table and all to play for. lovely stuff Posted December 20, 2017 Share Posted December 20, 2017 We have been playing decent foootball this season against teams lower down the pyramid.Until we start to play decent football regularly against teams in the top half of our league i'll hold judgement .Maybe some of our players are not inconsistent but just playing in a step above the level in which they could regularly express themselves? 53 seasons Posted December 20, 2017 Share Posted December 20, 2017 ...but 'lovely stuff' arguably our best performances were against Dulwich, Hendon and Maidstone I am not sure its all inconsistency. We seem to play a style which for large periods involves us having to soak up pressure. Sometimes we get lucky and hold out, on other occasions we dont. The performance last night was against a team which was clearly of a standard a step below the Bostick Premier. Nonetheless we did well with an experimental side showing eight changes from Saturday. We could have won by a margin. Our distribution was better but we remain vulnerable to fast wingplay and runs at our defence. Ben Ward Cochrane and Jack Hockney deserve more game time and George Beattie is improving on last nights showing. Agree with 'behind the goal' that a Hope / Greene/ Ward Cochrane partnership may bring more than we have been delivering up front so far. On the whole a positive night for Town and full marks to Andy Leese for being prepared to experiment in what may be our only realistic chance of a trophy this season Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
lovely stuff Posted December 20, 2017 Share Posted December 20, 2017 In the games you mentioned again good teams (lets not forget Billericay as well) ,we defending manfully for those games and rode our luck for large periods in them .We didn't compete with regards to technical ability or possession.We parked the proverbial bus.Against Maidstone this is understandable because they play at a higher level.I just don't think its a long term tactic that will be successful against the top half sides in our league. 4wembleyfinals Posted December 20, 2017 Share Posted December 20, 2017 Exactly what I have have been trying to say all this season, LS, the only difference being is that I have at times been castigated for suggesting it. It is even becoming boring to myself but I say yet again the way AL prefers to use certain players in the defence must be how he wants the team to play and how he best feels the club will maintain it's status in the league. It's not how I would play it, but so long as he achieves this I am ready to accept it is how it has to be. I do not believe , however, that this will be tolerated by the supporters if it is allowed to continue into next season. Hopefully if and when our league position becomes safe he might be willing to take a chance on others players and try something more expansive. littlehampton Posted December 20, 2017 Share Posted December 20, 2017 Well done to Andy Leese and the boys on our win last night, and reaching the quarter finals of the Velocity Trophy. Credit also to the Chips on running us so close. Chipstead might be a Division below us, but its worth noting they beat Leatherhead 5-0 at home in the Velocity Trophy, back in September, and defeated Vanarama National League side Woking 3-1 away, in the Surrey Senior Cup 1R, just two short weeks ago.
