WALTHAM ABBEY 2  HORNCHURCH 2

Acting manager Colin McBride made several changes in the starting line up, with Jed Chouman playing the full 90 minutes for the first time in over three months, and captain Elliot Styles sitting the match out as substitute. Jay Porter was also missing, following an injury at work.

On a damp day, with intermittent rain, Alex Bentley went close in the first minute, his shot cum cross deflecting out for a corner.

Abbey struggled to contain the visitors but none the less won a series of corners, none of which came to anything, and Hornchurch should perhaps have taken the lead on ten minutes when Connor Hogan who ran in from the left, but he directed his shot too close to Anthony Page in the home goal.

Brad Warner missed an opportunity to take the lead when he moved onto a long clearance, and although he weaved past two defenders, his shot was blocked and the ball was cleared.

Rimmel Daniel headed away a Bentley centre, and Bentley was in action at the other end clearing off the line when a Jack Devaney corner curled towards goal.

On the half hour Page was dispossessed, and Hogan sent in a hard shot, but Page recovered well to tip the ball over the bar.

Back at the other end, Billy Holland headed over from a Sam Robbins centre, and as Hornchurch again pressed forward, Bentley linked up with Olu Oluwatimilehin to feed the ball through to George Purcell, and his shot beat the keeper but rolled inches wide of the far post.

A minute from the interval Chris Assombalonga headed home from a Jed Chouman centre to give Hornchurch a half time lead.

Abbey replied twice within the space of seven second half minutes, Darrell Russell the scorer on both occasions, the first of which came a minute after the interval, when he finished off a solo run with a shot that went in via the post, and then touching the ball home from a cross by Nathan Koranteng.

In between Sam Mott had tipped over a Shad Ngandu free kick, and Brad Warner had gone close with a shot that Page turned around the post for a corner.

On 58 minutes the home goal survived a sustained siege, which ended when Page saved on the line from Purcell, the ball then bouncing around the goalmouth before being booted away.

Hornchurch then introduced Theo Fairweather-Johnson, Leon McKenzie and Nathan Livings, but despite Hornchurch pressure, the next chance came at the other end, where Kenzer Lee cleared a shot off the line.

One 75 minutes Page made an excellent save from Fairweather-Johnson, tipping the shot over the bar, and Abbey had to withstand constant pressure as Hornchurch powered forward. With six minutes left Bentley sent a free kick deep into the goalmouth, Leon McKenzie chested the ball back to Theo Fairweather-Johnson, who scored from close range.

Abbey defended in depth, and survived in stoppage time when McKenzie crossed into the middle and Purcell’s hard shot was deflected out for a corner.

Fan of the day - the dog that was giving their keeper abuse in the first half - excellent. Should have really won the game in the first half but Waltham Abbey started really well second half but even the Waltham Abbey fans to the left of me admitted that their second goal was somewhat fortunate. Great determination from the guys though to get the point and deservedly so. Congratulations to Potters Bar who are now confirmed in the other promotion place. Other than what happened to Jimmy, this has been a cracking season and looking forward to next season.
