HORNCHURCH 2  CONCORD RANGERS 0

On a mild evening, with the strong setting sun, Hornchurch were good value for their win over a side from the Conference South.

Concord had to defend for long periods, and there was an early chance for Jordan Clark, who ran through the Concord defence, and although he took the ball around Sam Beasant in goal, he was unable to turn it into the net from a difficult angle.

After Kenzer Lee had headed over from a Bradley Warner corner, and Beasant saved well from Sean Marks, Concord almost scored with their first attack, when, on 25 minutes, Callum Chafer dived to turn a hard drive from Dan Sanderson around the post.

Chafer saved from Jake Wiggins and Aaron Pollack in quick succession, and back at the other end, George Purcell hit a free kick high over the bar. Two minutes later, and from a similar position, it was Warner’s turn to take a free kick, and this also met the same fate.

Five minutes before the interval Jamie Hursit gained possession, cut inside, and fired in a left footed shot that Beasant saved at full stretch.

On the stroke of half time Lewwis Spencer moved in from the left and his shot beat the defence but went across the face of the goal and narrowly missed the far post.

Eight minutes into the second half, the hard-pressed Concord defence failed to clear a cross from the left and Theo Fairweather-Johnson volleyed the ball into the net from ten yards.

Concord came back strongly, forcing Hornchurch back onto defence, and a shot rebounded off the post, whilst Chafer punched away another centre from the right, and then make an excellent diving save to keep a hard drive out of the net.

George Saunders, stepping up from the Kelvedon Hatch in the Essex Olympian League, made a good run through the middle, but the ball bobbled as he went to shoot, and went wide of the post.

On 77 minutes Theo Fairweather-Johnson fired home after the Concord defence had failed to clear, and as the pressure mounted a Connor Hogan free kick was tipped over by Beasant to prevent a third goal.

Concord rallied and a Chafer was again called upon to make an excellent save, but Hornchurch looked confident as they played out the remaining few minutes.
