I tend to agree. Ever the diplomat I call for these people to be taken to a Court, but deep down I'd like to see them hanged.

Sickens me that the US get blasted for Guantanamo Bay, and it sickens me how those in power in the UK be it the Media or Government campaign for these "Britons" to be released.

Wheres my dummy/soapbox?

They're all bloody guilty:

1)The prisoners sould be failry tried. the UK ones of treason against their country.

2)The government's handling of this has been pathetic, not wanting to upset the yanks.

3)The treatment of individuals held in Guantanamo Bay by the US is disgusting. you cannot hold any human being for two years in those conditions without trial. The only reason they are held there is so that they are not on US soil and thus are exempt from US justice and those who want them released. they should be incourt, tried and then convicted or released.

I refer the Honourable Gentlemen to my reply on the '5 Arrested' thread, regarding this subject.

Wise words, FFUSA...but the liberal namby-pamby human-rights brigade don't share your good sense!

I am no liberal. I just want to see these people in court and tried and then convicted or released. If we promote ourselves as following the law and believing in justice then we should practice what we preach. If they are found guilty, punish them and punish thenm hard!

Sorry Mr H ! Wouldn't work !!

If they were tried in this country, they'd probably get a slap on the wrist and a free train-pass for Spain !

That's why I said punished hard. Treason is still one of the few offences in this country that can carry the death penalty. Whilst I am totally against capital punishment, surely if foudn guilty of fighting aginst our soldiers, ie treason, then a long prison sentence should be handed down.

I disagree. I believe in the sanctity of human life. I also believe that if you kill a murderer then you are brining yourself down to his/her level. ANyone found guilty of murder should serve life, should not be given comforts in prison and should be made to work hard!

The problem is NOBODY carries out any crime thinking they will get caught so the threat of punishment has nothing to do with it.

I dissagree...They know they are literally going to get away with murder if they get caught so the risk is worth it..however if let's say you knew you would lose your hand for stealing a mobile from someones handbag, then It would make you think twice...I have this on very good authority!!

You think it would...but History has shown it doesn't. Or at least, the threat of capital punishment is not a complete deterent.

A few centuries ago mandatory capital punishment exsisted for all thefts over the value 1 shilling. However, magistrates tended not to enforce it on a great many [petty] criminals as they personally believed the small amounts stolen didn't warrant the death penalty.

There is also little evidence that the threat of hanging actually reduced crime, as anyone reading the County Court Rolls and Record of Assizes of the 16th, 17th & 18th centuries would deduce. [i have, for the Chelmsford & Brentwood Assizes, just in case you're wondering].

Capital punishment existed more as an act of retribution.

When I was in Morrocco I saw many beggars [etc] with hands missing...some had no hands!

Makes you wonder?

sure but for most crimes surely retribution for the victim is as imortant as punishment for the criminal.. if someone nicked my car then sure i'd be annoyed and say the person got 3 months (muffled laughter) i could live with that.. if someone broke into my house, well thats totally different and i know for a fact that my missus and me would feel a whole lot better about it if we knew that the crimbo got 3 yrs in a small cell with mr BIG and a sound thrashing.. not cos he/her was off the streets but soley as payback
