I don't think GB would be that stupid, GB has a cushy job waiting for him once 'Our Tony'hangs up his hat. Can't see Gordon risking the 'Top Job'.

If GB did someone how get/take the job at the I.M.F one man who would lose out is most likely 'Tone', i know alot of Labour supporters who are only staying loyal to the party because Gordon is their to make sure Tony doesn't do anything stupid.

Ps...Don't get me started on what i think of the I.M.F

It's a ploy to stop New Labour turning back into Old Labour under the leadership of Gordon Brown. If this does happen, many Labour supporters would be very pleased, but many New Labour voters would look elsewhere, and the Labour Party would go back to being an opposition party.

At the I.M.F., Gordon Brown could do a fine job raising the profile of the United kingdom in the World. However, this is not going to happen, because there are better candidates for the job.

You asked for it Mal, well too be honest it's the one issue i class my self as being a [color:"red"] RED [/color] all over.

They only listen to the richest countries in the world never the smaller nations pleas for help who the I.M.F is meant to help.

I am totally against privatization but especially against the form of Privatization used by the I.M.F, bringing in American companies who get payed exuberant amounts of money and do very little to improved the infrastructures of health and travel.

For me the IMF are the modern day sheriff of Nottingham they feed the rich while crippling the poor. I feel they have single-handedly created the Third World debt which Africa and other poor nations have no chance of ever eradicating.

[color:"red"] Well - He DID say he wanted POLITICAL !!

[color:"blue"]

My view is that Big Tone has already decided on a retirement date to sit down and write his memoirs, (Ghosted by Cherie, of course), so I don't think he really gives a 'Toss' what happens to GB after the Kelly/WMD debacle !

An an election looming in FLEETUSA's neck of the woods, ( [color:"red"] Redneck ?) [color:"blue"]

Mmmm. The plot thickens........ [color:"black"]

Colin..do you mean...can a government reclaim a private company, so to put it under its own control? And are you asking if governments should only control CERTAIN concerns?

If that's what you mean...then I think I'm with Urchino on this too!!

Certain companies, such as utility providers [gas, electric, water etc] should not be profit motivated. Neither should the health service.

I also think there should be greater restrictions on the profits made on food by large supermarkets, and that growers should get the proper rate for their produce.

The public transport sector should always be centrally coordinated, and subsidised. Whether they have got it right in the past is a different matter. Portugal's railway was the best I've travelled on, completely subsidised, and puts ours to shame.

Anyway, back to the "privitisation theme" -

...this is why USA had the hump with Castro & Cuba during the revolution, because the Cuban government 'claimed back' their utility companies from the controlling American companies.

My mate - a complete and utter Castro fan - loves it there, and stays there about 2 months every year. Whilst there is some political oppression, he says you cannot fault the services - esp health service. [i'll take his word for it.]

And before anyone jumps on the "political oppression" comment - Think about this...

Isn't this what some of us have been calling for on these forums, with the Guatanamo Bay prisoners, "Sheik Hooky Ali Baba", and everyone else who seems to be attempting to 'undermine British culture'.

If this isn't what you meant Colin, then....forget what I just said <img src="/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Do you mean the companies which deliver the gas, water and electricity to other companies and private homes? Do you think that electricity generating companies should be profit motivated? Do you think that gas exploration companies should be profit motivated? Profit motivation brings us many benefits in many industries and services, but it cannot fit all industries and services.

Surely the profits on food made by large supermarkets are restricted by the competition between those large supermarkets, and between supermarkets and other outlets. I am certainly against profit regulation in competitive areas like these.

Public transport may well need subsidies. Roads are subsidised, too. This does not mean that they have to be run by civil servants, though.

Colin, on the whole I accept what you say. However, the problem with the supermarkets is that they are so big and their buying power so great that the food producers end up having to accept what is offered for what they produce. The farmers are making minimal profits whilst what is close to being are cartel are making millions. The balance does need to be addressed.

'the farmers are making minimal profits'

are you serious....the famer next door to me in essex drives a 200 grand bentley....so do most of the others around there.....

I accept that hill farmers in certain parts of the netherlands breed sheep on hills for very little profit...but they aint farmers really are they....just tinkers whos ancestors grabbed some land away back when...

any government backed or run or controlled organisation will lose money...it is the natural scheme of things....iron curtain russia is your perfect example....beaurocracies do not work unless profit motivated and ALL large companies are beaurocracies...

the concept of big daddy government run utility companies and other vital industries is tried tested and guaranteed to fail.....

if you take the profit out of industry you end with widespread industrial anarchy disguised as lethargy disguised as nationalisation...

fck that....gimme me the money...... <img src="/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

and the fckin bentley..... <img src="/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Getting rid of tariffs on food and clothes, which are what the poorest countries are best at producing, would certainly go a long way to making the poor people of the World richer whilst not making us people in rich countries poorer. However, the internal markets of the poor countries would need to be freed, too. Farmers in poor countries are often forced to sell their produce for less than it is worth on the World market, because the internal prices are kept down to keep the townspeople relatively happy.
