Greetings from Ontario, Canada, havn't posted anything for some time but keep up to date with current events.

 

Our North American (sorry US -there is a difference) friend is correct in his explanation of the election process in the 50's. I also believe there were only two senior leagues outside of the Football League, the Southern and Northern. Mind you, there were better teams in the Ismithian and Athenian leagues, but they were amateur leagues. (There were 2 notable teams coming out of that system - Wimbledon & Wycombe). Anyway, I digress, the Fleet in the 50's were certainly good enough to play in the "bigs". They were considered better than Gillingham in those days. The only trouble, if they had got in, could they have sustained it? There was no real farm system and the players, like Logie, Scarth, Heathcote, MacDonald, Carson, Shaw, Bridge, Robertson, Thomas and Day had all had their day (no pun intended). They would have done well for one season, then what? I think what the team is trying to do now is probably better in the long term. Lets just secure our safety first, then move on from there. I think a new facility is a must.

Totally agree the 50's team would have struggled(but maybe we could have attracted new players)more than one season.....and i think the way the current board is approaching the subject is the right way to go. This is like a jig-saw puzzle....until you have all the pieces......you can't complete the picture!
