When we all wear brown

Recommended Posts

Hmm. I would certainly not want to chuck the proverbial baby out with the bathwater. It is not our nature to bang our own drum, and we don't really need to.

Some of the great things about this county, nation, people, call it what you will, are our tolerance, our indignation at the oppression or mistreatment of the defenceless and our willingness to intervene on their behalf, our loyalty to friends and our welcome to visitors, strangers visitors and newcomers.

For example, the UK was the first major state to ban slavery and actively fight against it, one of the first western nations to give votes to women and to introduce universal compulsory education. We invented football and proper beer.

Yes, maybe we do need to be more comfortable with our Englishness. Even though I'm considered to be an LPG (leftie pinko guardianista) I don't like seeing money wasted on council leaflets, road signs or whatever printed in umpteen languages, for example. If you can't read English, you should go and learn, in your own time and at your own expense. OK directions and things on tube trains and statin can be in major Eurpean languages for the benefit of toursits and visitors, a different kettle of fish.

As for all this "eductaion" about "other cultures", banning christmas trees but "celebrating" the hindu thing with candles and stuff, well what a bloody laugh.

But I don't want to go too far, like I say. Good luck to all sorts, if you're different to me I'd love a beer with you, and welcome to my city. But don't ask me to change it for you.

apparently he's discovered the ruins of an ancient civilisation under the old docks in Billericay and unearthed evidence that there was once intelligence in the area....
