I have to reply to this, they were hooligans not fans, yes associated with Shrewsbury not with the club. If you see one on saturday it could well be a miracle as they probably wont be out of their coffins that early.

Our fans are well behaved ask Northwich for proof, we had 2800 at their place on New Years Day, not bad out of a 3200 crowd.

Fans clash with police in Wellington before the derby match kick-off.

 

Police in riot gear were called in to break up rival football fans as a series of flare-ups marred a stormy Shropshire derby clash. A total of six people were arrested before, during and after last night's FA Trophy quarter-final replay between Telford United and Shrewsbury Town.

In the worst of the trouble a Wellington pub had its windows smashed and its curtains set on fire before the game.

 

Police insisted their "robust, but fair" approach had kept problems to a minimum and said the majority of fans had been well-behaved.

 

Extra officers were called in for the clash at the Bucks Head and the game was made all-ticket in a bid to avoid trouble.

 

Bosses at Telford United, who celebrated their first competitive victory over their county rivals in more than 60 years, winning 2-1, praised the police for keeping a lid on potential problems around the ground.

 

Trouble flared in Wellington before the game as around 50 Shrewsbury fans crammed into The Oddfellows Arms in High Street.

 

Landlady Sandra Price said bottles were thrown through the pub windows, curtains were set on fire, seats slashed and staff were faced with vandals urinating in the corridors.

 

The group of fans were ejected and led to the ground at around 6.30pm by more than 50 officers.

 

She said the pub had been packed with a chanting throng who were being taunted from outside by more than 50 Telford supporters.

 

Mrs Price said: "The first lot of fans were brilliant. But then a second lot came in. That's when it kicked off. The bottles were going through the window, and they set fire to the pub.

 

"They were animals. They stole the pool balls and completely trashed the toilets."

 

Superintendent Peter Robinson, who led the policing operation, confirmed that three people had been arrested for public order offences in Wellington before the game.

 

He said another three arrests were made after kick-off, one inside the ground, and four people were ejected by match stewards at half-time.

 

"It is only ever a small number of individuals who are intent on causing trouble among some 4,400 who enjoyed the game but troublemakers were monitored and problems dealt with speedily and effectively."

 

Robin Eaves, of Telford United, said the atmosphere inside the ground was brilliant and added that the club was hoping for a cup final appearance at Villa Park.

It's a good job that the internet wasn't around at the time we were playing maidstone or Dartford because like all local derbies we got our fair share of idiots that only turned up for these matches.

 

I shall certainly be going on Saturday and I don't expect to have any trouble.

That is a VERY interesting question Up Fleet...it deserves some attention....but alas, as most of us on these forums are "proper supporters" I doubt if we'll ever really understand why the "hooligan element" exists at all, let alone at non-league level.

Its a shame that these idiots (who turn up at about 5 games a season) seem to have given us a bad name here.

 

Hopefully, the people who do make the long trip tomorrow will agree with people who have it down as one of their favourite away days.

 

A lovely town centre just 10 minutes walk away, picturesque (if a little dated) ground, numerous pubs within 5 minutes walk of the ground full of friendly fans and good food, as well as cheap plentiful parking normally make for a good day out.

 

And prior to this year, teams often used to take three points back with them as well......

 

A 1 goal victory for us I think.

Where is the best place to park?

The Abbey Pay and Display car park opposite the ground.

 

I've stolen the following from the http://www.footballgroundguide.co.uk web-site:

 

"At the end of the M54 continue onto the A5. After about seven miles, there is a traffic island which is at the junction with the A49. Bear left at this island still following the A5. At the next traffic island, turn right towards Shrewsbury (signposted A5064 town centre/crematorium). Follow this road past Shrewsbury College and up to another island. At this island there is a large 'Nelson Column like statue' on your right. Take the 3rd exit (the football ground is signposted at this point) and this will take you down into Abbey Foregate. Follow the road down until you come to the Abbey (passing the Dun Cow pub on the left). The ground is further down on the right. Just before this on the left is the Abbey Foregate pay & display car park, which if you arrive early enough, then should be able to find spaces. If you continue past the ground and under the railway bridge, you will pick up signs for other town centre car parks."

 

Once parked, there is the excellent Crown pub opposite the car park or turn right up the road to find the Dun Cow, Bricklayers Arms etc. all within a 2-5 minute walk.

 

If walking into Town (turn left out of the ground and keep walking), you'll also pass the (small) Nags Head.
