I didn't think I'd ever see the day when our 150-odd goal legend is described as 'dis portway bloke'...

Portway was a good player but he only ever played in the lower leagues I believe that the best player I ever saw was either Lee Smelt( quality goalkeeper who had a long league career) or Ben Emburey (a class centre half in our best season in the Alliance)

I actually thought Johnny Cowen was a more consistent keeper than Smelt. Smelt was alittle unfortunate - choosing to go to Forest when they still had Shilton, and an up and coming Cris Woods, let alone Montgomery who was still around. Never really stood a chance of making it there and would have been better going to a lower level club to learn his trade, then move upwards.

Smelt was a class keeper,Geoff Idle a quality right back,Brown,Woon & Woolfe were wonderful to watch on their day,and what about John Thurgood for consistency.

All decent players at their level - not sure if they'd have coped at our current level, though - albeit that I remember Woolfie being looked at by Chelsea (I believe his lack of pace let him down)
