The Ryder Cup 2004

Recommended Posts

As an event, this is one of my favourites that always look forward to.

I love it all, the build up, the good etiquette (Well nearly always) , the drama that unfolds over 3 days culminating in possibly the most exciting finally to a sporting event, the singles competition on the last day.

Come on Europe, let's stick it to the Americans!

I don't fully understand golf (plan to take it up when I retire) but when the Ryder Cup comes around there is some real buzz and Ido try and watch come of it.

However, please can someone explain the format. What are the Four ball, two balls and singles. How does the scoring work?

Four Balls: Two Yanks vs Two Euros. Each player has their own ball. And each side takes their best score.

Foursome: Two Yanks vs Two Euros. One ball per pair.

Singles: One on one.

Obviously, the lowest score wins each hole. Whoever wins the most holes wins that particular rubber and scores 1 point for their team. If a match is tied each side get a point a piece. Because it is matchplay you can win a match without completing the full eighteen. Hence scores like X beat Y 5&4. He was five holes ahead with four to play.

Hope that is clear and right. I am sure someone will be along to correct me if I am wrong.....

An absolutely superb first day for the Europeans, (Well - The Brits plus some others).

Lets hope it continues and the Colonial Gallery don't get all ratty like they did 8 years ago !

What a great two days! Just need three singles victories from 12 to retain the cup. Come on the Europeans. Just don't do a Brookline.

Don't you feel more European now? <img src="/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

It was a classic TEAM performance by us !

No Prim-Donna's. All for one, and one for all !

The 'Rookies' were encouraged and supported by the more experienced players, and we all appeared to be enjoying the golf which is more than can be said for the great 'Tiger' as he drove off on the ist hole on the first day.

I just don't think the yanks had their heart in it from day one !
