What A Shambles

I think today was the worst performance this season, for £9 admission I think the Canvey fans deserve better than that.with at least half the team with football league experience they should have buried a team of Aveleys standard by half time.

Passes going astray, the long boot up the field, whats happened to the brilliant football we were playing last season ?

And why are the management team still laughing and joking in the dugout when we struggling at 0-0 with 20 minutes to go ?

Thank god we werent playing one of the top teams in the league today we would have been slaughtered !

But isn't that what the FA Cup is all about? It's the greatest domestic football competition in world because anything can happen - including Canvey Island being given the runaround by an inferior team. It happened to us at Lowestoft and at Burgess Hill and, no doubt, it will happen again at some time.

But it also happened at Port Vale, at Wigan and at home to Northampton. The difference on those occasions was that we saw the Football League teams crying into their beer while the Ryman wanabees were doing a lap of honour.

I think if we were playing one of the top teams in the league today you might well have seen a different performance. Perhaps not. It's that uncertainty that makes it the perfect game.

Now cheer up and start looking forward to the next round. At least we're in the hat!

im with merv we have no right to stroll it around the park.. we have had two great seasons, now with out tilly n stimmo we are going to have to watch some more 'normal' football..that means struggling n occasionally getting dicked.. face it, we aint the outstanding team at this level at the moment.. as for jeff n glenn having a laugh.. long may they do so, football is supposed to be fun. i'd rather see that than a couple of loons losing it in the dugout.. those two arn't the kind of people who go bonkers in public.. im sure what goes on in the dressing room is plenty enough.. tho please conjour something up for the yawnfleet game!!

I can understand the frustration of Basil-Don, it hit me yesterday too. I think Aveley should walk away proud of their performance yesterday. They say that to get a win when playing badly can't be too bad but for me there are still one or two players that seriously need to look at their performances, one in particular continues to get a start and should be subbed before others and never has been, is this a case of putting favouritism before common sense?

It has been said that this years squad is the strongest so far, I dont agree - unless of course we are still awaiting that elusive gell factor to emulate, if it ever will. To me our strongest squad was last season upto the period when Tilly & Bodders had their operations, we started to drop away after that and have never been the same since.

I still think we need a steadier inlfuence in mid-field, was the early release of Jason Dozzel wise, was he given ample opportunity to regain his fitness?

Well said Vic at least you dont seem afraid to make a criticism,i think there are some on this forum who would not criticize no matter how bad we are playing.

My remarks are only made because i care about the club and want success and this is one way of showing my frustration when things are going wrong,i believe there is not enough passion shown by the fans an example being when do you here them getting behind the team until after they have scored and taken the lead in a game.

As for my remark about jeff & glen ,it is upsetting when i am getting frustrated at the way the team is playing but they give the impression that they dont give a monkeys whats going on on the field and what impression does that give the players.

I know CANV says football should be fun and i agree but to my mind theres not much fun to be had at the lane at the moment

As I said, I understand your feelings but unfortunately we do have to take the lows with the highs. On reflection, I would say that we have had some great highs over the seasons, so too then are our expectations, I suppose we must learn to live with what is happening and hope the gell process completes soon. But it must be said that for the most we do not look to be the strongest squad so far.

Will things work out to be too late ;time no doubt will tell.

As for the supporters, for the most part they have not had an enormous amount to shout about this season so far if we are to compare to the last two!!

It is only right that we must ask why certain players get a start irrespective, whilst others dont. A for instance, Lee Protheroe is good enough and shows his worth whenever he comes on as sub so why is he not played at the start, are these sort of tactics benificial? I don't think so!!

expectations are very high after the last 2 seasons.. remember we are a club that attracts 600 fans to home games.. if there was 2,500 of us then maybe i would expect a more morose attitude... as for jeff having a laugh, without him this club would be poncing around in the essex senior and half of us wouldn't even know it was there.. i have great hopes for the club and would love to see us in the conf and pushing for a league spot in a new stadium .. but the road to success in never a straight line .. with out a few setbacks winning dosent mean much.. i know a few arsenal fans who are getting bored.. now maybe we arn't playing the 'sexy' football of last season but a quick look at the last six results sees 5 greens n one yellow... i'll settle for 6 months of that!!

I think that the trouble with Canvey and our fans is that since we joined the Rymans we have always been near the top of each division, fighting for promotion or, in one poor season, near the bottom fighting relegation. I think that this is why we appear to have had some miffed supporters earlier in the season when we were mid table and looking as if we were going nowhere. People must realise that sooner or later, be it in the Rymans, Conference or even Football League we will have a season where we are mid table all year and, in effect, there is little or nothing to shout about from one end of the season to the other. The same applies to the FA Cup where, one day we will go out in an early round and have no run at all. Just look at a team like Yeovil, great cup fighting reputation but they can't turn over league opposition each year. If we don't do it this year then so be it, there will always be next.

However, the above said, let's hope that our current league position will get better and we will have the leaders looking over their shoulders before May and let's hope we can get another league scalp in the Cup (no disrespect to Slough).

Continuing this thread on from today's game, I thought I was having deja vue from the Braintree game!

We saw the team fall apart yet again and squander a two goal lead! I find it amazing that a player can have a run of three or four bad games and still be garenteed a place in the starting line-up where as another player might make a slip up during a game, be substituted and never play again for a month!

Next player out the door... Matt Jones!!!

Well said PUMPKIN, I said this on another thread i have yet to see matt jones make any contribution to the team whenever hes played he seems well out of his depth at this level.

I agree there seems certain players who are assured of their place no matter how they play. Why was Danny Potter dropped on Saturday? he has been on top form in every game he has played,I dont think the defence plays with the same confidence when Ash plays because he hesitates when coming for crosses and often doesnt come at all, they seem more assured when Potter plays because hes more positive.

I can only think that Ash played on Saturday, in order to rest Potter for tomorrow night. It's probably harder for Ash to get to a midweek game than Potter due to him working at College.

That was utter S**T second half, the only 1 player that can stand up and say he had a good 90 minutes was wardy (That is why he is still at Canvey after 300 games)

The way I saw saturday was going in at half time having a nice John Smith looking at all the results and talking to another fellow supporter and becoming slightly optimistic about our chances of sneaking the championship !!

Another 45 minutes later walking out the ground thinking who wants to play for this club because the team that came out for the second half certainly didn't !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A player for me who has not shown his usual colours this year is Duffers. WHY !

I also thought I would never say this but I actually think we may have missed Benno in the middle of the park.

PS. Purfleet are an average team and we made them look good second half........

Kingy bring back some bite in this team, They used to come out as if they have had a rocket shoved up the A**e at half time now they come out as if they are high.........

Well said Hillsy, its what ive been saying for weeks, once again on Saturday Purfleet had pulled it back to 2-2 and what were jeff & glen doing ? having a laugh and joke in the dugout.

Is this the arrogance that jeff said cost us the league last season ? its time they sorted out the non performers and sent them to Grays !

Congratulations to Wardy on his 300th game to get Man Of The Match, just a shame that the team lost a 2-0 lead in the 2 period and missed the chance to take full advantage on the league leaders.

Very disappointing and needs a better performance at Boreham Wood tonight. Sort it out Canvey!

You can not really start banging the "fans deserve better than that for 9 quid a time" drum, (thats my opinion only). What ever you pay to get in your still going to get performances that leave you banging your head against a wall in frustration! (unfortunatly theres a lot of Canvey fans with headaches right now agreed?) but I tell you what gets the fans annoyed is the lack of commitment and 'bite' in the tackles. I saw a few players pulling out of 50-50 balls in the centre of the park saturday. Thats what winds me up !! Only the usual supsects get stuck in where it hurts (gregors/wardy)

and appear to be the only ones 'up for it' each week. As for the Gaffer and his number 2 laughing when things are going pear shaped on the park, I cant comment on that as I dont stand near the dug-outs but it does sound worrying. As Hillsy said earlier, the days of Kingy letting rip in the dressing room appear to be long forgotten. Canveys 2nd half performances are reminisscent of Englands 2nd half against Brazil 4 months ago...clueless !!

now now.. thats football. get within 9 points by xmas and we are in with a shout, especially after our crap start to the season..apart from the K's everyone is dropping points, could be an open title race this time around.. you never know maybe, just maybe canvey could be the team that comes good when it counts this time round...

this team can play, ok not for long enough periods at the moment, but thats 8 unbeaten when we are by everyones admission not putting it together.. im still banking on a good run of form next year when it all finally comes together with some regularity.. if we can hang on for a bit longer to the leaders...who knows.. maybe the more 'relaxed attitude' of our glorious leaders could be what is required when the pressure comes on
