Quality stuff

Merv

Recommended Posts

Have to say, the postings on the Canvey discussion board over the past few weeks has been (in my opinion) first rate. I tend to browse lots of other discussion boards and most of them are made up of total pap. Mostly stupid messages that mean very little. I can honestly say that I have learnt a lot from you lot out there with the quality of debate that has been printed on these web pages. Be it humourous threads, critical or pure speculation, it has always been quality stuff.

Goodbye John Crawshaw, Bald Eagle, EFM and their like. Keep it up lads, and more important, keep posting.

I'll second that!!

The Gravesend board has been invaded by Margate, Billericay keep slagging off Calder and his antics and St. Albans are either receiving a b*****king from Aldershot or coming up with pointless polls!!

We don't have the idiots from Gravesend, Braintree, Bedford, Billericay or St. Albans debating on whether Jeff King's waist size is bigger than his wallet, or if our island has more in-breds than the New Eyrie etc.

Our views and debates have been purely constructive and have very rarely veered from Non-League football topics. These have consisted from the Northwich fiasco, to team selection and I always enjoy being able to post my view without some pathetic comment from opposing fans that have no sense of knowledge of our club and set-up.

Every Canvey fan on here has a view and something to say and from my postings to pabird's they are constructive and legitimate to these discussions.

Another thing is the number of players we've had view and sometimes even post on the forum. Wardy has posted before not to mention visits from Ash, Parms and even those that haven't bothered to register a profile before. They must feel happy to know that the Yellow Army are having sensible discussions about their performances week in, week out. The football on the pitch pleases the fans who come on here to post, which gets back to the players in various forms and that pleases them and so the cycle continues.

Keep it up Gulls fans!!!!!!

The great thing about the game and our board in particular is that everybody is a manager or coach in disguise who is allowed to develop their own viewpoints

Like so many on the CIFC forums I love the game, love to talk about the game am delighted by the humour and of course am convinced that of the circa 600 opinions per week mine is the right one

Lets keep it going Matthew

"the only time you are wrong is when you disagree with me!"

Thanks Merv (I promise to work harder in future) and can I accept those comments as my half term report

Why as a matter of interest do you consider our forum is that better developed than the rest

Accepted individuals such as yourself and Matthew have put the ergs in but even then the humour and development of debate is way beyond any other forum I have raided

looking around the forums not many fans seem too happy with the way there teams are playing even aldershot are moaning!! (tho they have the farnboro fiasco to cheer em up at the moment) last night we could have put stortford to bed in the first 15 mins and it could have been 'one of those nights' despite deserving the points.. i think most of us can see the team is capable of much more when it comes together, but obviously that dosent happen all the time.. the only trouble is we have left ourselves so little margin for error

I think we may have a lot to thank John Crawshaw, Iron Knob, Bald Eagle, EFM, etc, etc, for. Their rantings, based not on football knowledge but on hate/envy/malice showed us for a long time how NOT to do things. During their spell in 'contol' of our message board so many others. like yourself, chose not to visit. And who could blame them.

Since they've gone (and may God continue to bless them) our fans have realised how a good discussion board is meant to run. Everyone is trying so hard to keep the level of debate at a high level, lest it return to the shambles it was earlier. The quality of postings is generally high with nobody trying to score cheap points off anyone or to humiliate others (or even to incite others into doing so). Even JC's recent postings on our general board were, unbelieveably, interesting and balanced. Yes, even he has learnt the value of quality debate.

The other strength about this board (and this could be coincidence or perhaps something in the Canvey water) is the genuine humour. I am happy for anyone to poke fun at me, but it has to be funny. Take the recent Basilricay map thread. I printed a map showing Billericay as North Basilricay, joking about it just came up on my latest version of Autoroute like that. Simon, from the Billericay website, posted an updated version with Canvey nowhere to be seen; suggesting it had been submerged, thanks to global warming. What could I say other than, Brilliant, Well done. Trouble with EFM et. al., they simply weren't funny.

Keep up the level of debate and humour, one and all.

Has anybody been on the Hornchurch forum lately?

It makes Billericay's look intelligent.

All it is is juvenile swearing and name calling (and that is amongst their own fans) and very little intelligent debate.

A thread entitled Urchins v Aveley leads to a slanging match between so called Hornchurch supporters and Aveley fans(I didn't know they had that many). Some of the comments and language are absolutely embarrassing and quite laughable.

It gets worse! A thread on the genral forum Fan Base sees Hornchurch supporters call each other names, lambast others ideas. The attitude is generally aggressive and at times quite disgusting. It's amazing what a bit of money can do to a club but these so called Urchins' fans are proving to be a real disgrace.

Then you hear reports of teenage Hornchurch fans throwing bottles at the Aveley bench on Saturday. I can't say I'm that surprised after reading some of the stuff on their forum.

I feel sorry for the genuine fans who have to put up with this.

I'm so glad that the Canvey forum is an intelligent place for discussion and debate, where people's ideas are valued and we don't have petty slanging matches that degenerate into swearfests!!

The people who post regularly on this forum should be proud of the fact that this is still a place for entertaining debate and great humour not juvenile insults!!

I have had about four or five goes at coming to terms with the Hornchurch forum in the belief that it is a wind-up by aliens

But no it is for real these are earth people (we can describe them loosely as such) who are suitable cases for treatment

The sadness of course is that they are well located to draw reasonable gates and players etc should some blind, deaf man of means consider putting development monies together (maybe the judge who imprisoned Tony Martin )

Located where they are geographically you have to wonder who would win the race to avoid claiming them as their own, Essex or London

Don't want to keep bleating on about it, but the discussion board is, IMHO, still quality debate and sensible, healthy argument. Should any opposing fans come on in the next couple of weeks and try winding us up, just remember, the answer is with God! (If you catch my drift???)

Had a lovely email from Frances in the week in which she complimented us all on '...such a superb quality of comment and debate on the site.' For an unofficial forum to get this kind of praise from the club is terrific. From Ian, Matt and myself who look after all the technical bits of the whole CanveyFC website, a big THANK YOU to all of you who continue to argue, debate, banter, quarrel, debate, disagree, bicker and squabble. You make this discussion board what it is. Well done, all of you.

Merv

PS Let's stuff Bedford tomorrow!

Since Merv's message on the 21st March, we've seen it all!

The loss to Aldershot, the thrashing of Enfield, the agony of losing a Trophy Final on penalties and the prospect of winning the League Cup.

But still the quality of debate is still top notch!

We're getting history lessons off pabird, we're poking fun at our Admin <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> and we're already discussing tactics on how to best win the League next season.

We don't have the idiots anymore. Bedford have gone, St. Albans have sobered up, Braintree are no-more, Gravesend have matured, Aldershot weren't that offensive to begin with anyway and Billericay are just laughable.

Although next season I expect a lot of stick from Bedford as I feel they will be Championship contenders it is somewhat suttle at the minute on our forums. They season is coming to a close and soon we'll have to think of other things besides football to talk about, it is a General Forum! Let's keep it going and what ever news comes of arrivals and departures at Park Lane - let's get ready for the new season in style!!!
