Attack on Conference status over for another season Canv but valuable time left to build for next season

Once can be bad luck twice stretching the limits of bad luck but three times needs examination

We have a top class entertaining team that is falling over the last hurdle for good reason and we will all put together our opinion on those reasons

For me we fall down when failing to trust to the basic core nature of our ability IE we should look to improve the receiving, passing movement that kills off so many standard sides until that skill level is beyond the better sides

We tend to leave our receive, pass move basics when in doubt and revert to attempts at finding killer passing from the back to the front,if we are a passing side with composure then build on that skill

Strength and pace of body and more importantly mind are essential and better players must have one or both

But lets go for a team ethic built from the back which demands continual improvement

Last word? would!nt this league be boring minus the Canvey Island

This league would be boring without Canvey Island FC.

It would turn into a civil war with everyone fighting amongst themselves and not coming here to slag us off. Besides who else is there to come second every year?

I think this season our downfall was not only the losses at the beginning of the season, but so many home draws. We had home draws against: Braintree, Sutton, Hayes, Hendon, Kingstonian, Bedford & Purfleet. Most of these I say with the exception of Bedford should've been easy wins. In fact they were games where we took our foot of the pedal and lapsed in concentration. Hendon is a prime example, I think we were 2-0 up and ended up losing until the last 15 minutes.

I agree with pabird, though it's usually the basics that work the best. Building from the back and moving forward rarely let the opposition get a touch of the ball. It's been proved for seasons that we can attack down both flanks, instead of the big 'hoof' upfield, knock down and run-on.

One thing I like about Danny Potter in goal is that when he has the ball, he's quick to react and get the ball out. But not only does he get the ball out fast. It's usually a throw to one of the wingers, who then run and build-up an attack with passing and moving. It beats the big long kick and then a game of head tennis ensues that never falls in our favour and the opposition now gain possession and the advantage.

I think this pre-season we shouldn't focus on who the oppostion is we attract, nor who is on trial, but the way in which we can build from the back using the ball on the floor, free passing and movement, improving our finishing and how to decimate teams that play for the draw home and away, especially when we have to play against the Referee too.

we have no trouble passing it around against the lowwer half teams..look at our record against em!! out downfall was leaking to many goals, this was no prob against the dross as we would score at least 3 but against the better organised busy midfields and defences of the better teamns it cost us dearly... last season with the trophy team was the golden chance fo rus and it was missed we did reslly well to get in the frame this season but it was too much.. next season i want to see a much tighter defence , pissing over the poorer teams and dogging out some tough battles against the cream of the league much like they have against us...how many games did we win 1 nil this season? how many clean sheets. its the 1 nillers away to the top teams that will win us the league.. get the defence sorted!!

I think I agree Canv but only if we agree that defence starts at number nine and includes every member of the side

Think about points lost at games where opposition ground out the pressure from us

Bedford, Shots, Purfleet wins there and we were in the Conference yet in all these games the opposition defended 1-thro-11

The other area in which I agree is that those teams do not appear to play mid-fielders in defence, natural mid-fielders are a risk in big games when located in the back 3 or 4

CANV I think you've just hit the nail right on the head with most fans! I've got a feeling next year the main three will be Wardy, Cheners, & Cowan.

But why not 4 at the back with Wardy, Cheners, Cowan & Crow? Ross Johnson can be cover if he stays and so can Benno. A covering full-back is what we need so if we do go 4 at the back, there is cover for either Wardy or Crow if they get injured. Putting a Central Defender at Full-Back is not going to be the answer 100% of the time.

Cowan is a superb player to have and his injury was very unlucky and came at a bad time for us. With his playing from the beginning next season we could have another Stevie Porter or Mick Bodley on our hands!!

Crow is a natural full-back and would always be suited to 4 at the back instead of 3. Crow is the type of player I was mentioning in my earlier post about being able to build from the back. Look at him in the first half of the 'Ricay game and the Chesham match!!

Cheners we know has signed a new two-year contract so he'll be at the heart of it all with Cowan. I feel Cheners is playing the best he has all season at the minute...

...and then there's Wardy, we all know about him, he's the ginger one that can't score He came to us in the first place as a Right-Back so why not take him back to his youth and put him there again?

I like four, not three and this time I'm not being greedy!! I looked back on the main-site at the beginning of the 99/00 season and judging by the players we had then we did play 4-4-2.

An example taken from our site - September 4th 1999 Canvey Island FC -Vs- Carshalton Athletic.

The line-up was:

Harrison - Goalkeeper obviously

Ward, Moore, Bennett, Davidson - the Defenders

Duffy, Stimson, Lindsey, Tilson - the Midfield

Williams & Parmenter up front.

Can anyone think of a better formation to put them in?

without a stimmo or tilly in midfield i would also prefer 4 at the back.. the back four matt suggests looks pretty fecking tasty.. j.k n minton pick themselves then u have duffers knight parms dobbers proths etc etc nothing wrong with boylan ollie greggors and brayley up front.. i would like to see brayley play a few solely as an attacker with everyone fit we have loads of midfielders so no more ollie having to play back there .. also i would like to see us rip the [****!!****] out of the first 5 games for a change we always seem so laid back early on in the season

Canv the following is taken from a match report circa 2 years ago

We played 4-4-2 and were able to graft for the i-niller you were requesting, We now have a goal scoring machine not available to us then

PS It was one of the coldest most miserable nights I have ever spent at that holiday retreat known as brrrfleet and we produced top stuff all night.

Canvey - Ashley Harrison, John Kennedy, Chris Duffy, Ben Chenery, Mick Bodley, Steve Ward, Steve Tilson, Craig Davidson, Neil Gregory, Wayne Vaughan Steve Parmenter,

Purfleet probably consider themselves unlucky and in his BBC Essex interview after the game, manager Colin McBride hinted as much. He seemed reluctant to admit the truth; that Canvey had a solid defence, they dominated the midfield and, but for a lack of conversions up front, might have won this game by at least four or five clear goals.

I won't start on about him again I promise.

I've just read that Chris Keeble's contract will not be renewed at the end of the season by Colchester.

At 25 could he be a midfielder heading our way?

Bertie with Boylan would develop into some partnership but would need a change in the supply line

Maybe Jeff in closer behind them with a holding man in front of the defense

You must be looking for the through ball rather than the ball in for greggors head

Does pabird, know his stuff or what!!!

I think Bertie is a good player to have in the squad, I certainly wouldn't have him start a game. Too many chances this season and not enough rewards.

But since the Aldershot game, I think he is gradually improving. He does seem more 'up for it' but I think he needs to sort his attitude a bit more. Shouting out "F***er" everytime the goalkeeper kicks the ball out doesn't help either.

He's much better than Wayne Vaughan, but he's no Boylan. I've said in the past that during some games he's reminded me of Vaughan, especially when he's been playing up front.

If Bertie wants to make it at Park Lane he has to get his head down and battle for his place.

He's quick, can beat players and is motivated. But on the downside, sometimes he's greedy, will not pass the ball, wants to take everyone on himself and score the wonder goals. If he got more involved as a team and passed the ball more linking up with players who are in better scoring positions than himself then he will become a good asset to CIFC.

Ditto most of above, our main problem is always early seasons first 6 games which revolve around Wardy being away.

Must add though, how many times have supporters noticed a problem with one player, when another can do better and the change has taken forever to be noticed by those that matter.

No doubt that there has been a major defensive problem most of this term the goals for and against highlight that fact.

Here is to a better start next term and a more even and consistant performance throughout!

Also another thing off topic I know but I'd like to note about the 'language' at Park Lane about certain individuals. Just before the Billericay game kicked off I was standing next to Ben Chenery's two young daughters. They came around after we'd tossed up to join the Yellow Army. I'm sure they've been told about what they might hear, but I don't think Cheners would like it if one of his daughters all of sudden told him to "Shut up you f**king W***er" would he?

I know Jeff himself mentioned it in the Port Vale programme that more women and children were coming to Park Lane, and we don't want silly stuff like this to put them off. It can be funny and witty most of the time and it can also be frustrating, but some people just take it over the top when it's un-nessecary.
