Canvey 0-0 Morcambe

Sorry if you were expecting a match report, I'll leave that to someone capable. The official Website's report on this game is almost as bad as the ref! Gives absolutely no information about the game, I'm going to stop reading them, they're total [****!!****]. That now leaves the official website with no information for me at all besides fixtures, shame. Sorry to moan about this yet again, but it seems it's getting worse every game.

Frustrating game today but better than Woking last week. We dominated much of the game but couldn't quite find an opening.

First half we had plenty of possesion but created little. Second half was more of the same as we dominated possesion but couldn't find a way through.

Morecambe struck the bar and Danny made a great save in a one on one situation but for the most part it was Canvey who looked like winning it.

Greggors headed over and then volleyed an effort over. Duffers had a shot into the side netting and Sedgemore hit an effort narrowly off target.

Best chance fell to Ollie Berquez who somehow failed to get an already goalbound effort on target inexplicably headed the bar wide when the ball already looked destined for the net.

A frustrating game then but a few positives. Gav had a solid game at the back and J.K produced a tenacious display nearly back to his best.

Duffers was much better but man of the match was Neil Midgley who produced a hard working display on the right and was never afraid to shirk challenges.

An OK performance but the game was there for the taking today.

Not proving difficult for Gravesend

Personally I wouldn't use the word "difficult" - just "frustrating"

I would never say you played well. You were almost as bad as us. I thought you would be a good footballing side, I was wrong. It was a hoofing contest for the most part.

Oh, and it's MorEcambe.

Fair write up Yellow EFM - frustrating.

Another game where we could quite easily have had all the points. If your not looking at posession but at grade A chances then I feel Morecambe will be well disappointed. It's been mentioned on this forum before - you must take your chances - their finishing was woeful hit the bar and a one on one with Danny - superb save.

Our chances - I really can't remember any that were that good.

Wouldn't have made Midgely my man of the match - think that would go to Gavin Cowans - worked his socks off.

We are doing OK at the back but I just can't put my finger on whats happening up front. Lee seems to be getting drawn further and further to the wings and he ain't going to get much from there. I wouldn't start Duffers - I just don't think he has got it at the moment IMHO.

Ben makes some nice little plays in the first half, but again - is it me, or does he seem to disappear in the second half

We are a quarter of the way through the season and I've not seen much in the way of opposition that has worried me. But things don't seem quite right to me. At the moment we seem to be emulating Norwich (or vice versa)- picking up points by holding the opposition but look at their league position.

We seem to be running out of ideas going forward. I am afraid that Greggors isnt good enough for the conference and we will have to try something different. Like just about every Canvey fan I want to see Jon Keeling play from the start. He has only played one game starting this season against Tamworth and was outstanding until his disgraceful sending off. I would like to see Junior start as well and play all three of them up front. At the moment Boylan seems to be the one trying to get the crosses in and there is noone there to scroe. He must be the one on the receiving end of the crosses.

On the bright side it looks like there is only one relegation spot up for grabs. Northwich had little hope of staying up anyway there losing 10 points for going into adminstration makes them certain for the drop. Forest Green look certain as well. Lets hope we can get our long awaited first home win against them next week. If we cant beat them then we do have major problems,

I have to agree with 'non e mouse' pinched the words from my mouth, so to speak.

I think Boylan is coming out to the wings because he isnt getting a touch in the centre, it must be getting frustrating for him. I wouldnt start with Midgley or Duffy at the Mo, Cowan had a blinder yesterday, I also thought that gregory had a good game but berqueze seems to run himself into trouble if he doesnt offload the ball in time, he missed a good few slots yesterday.

I would like to see the new guy Goodwin make an appearance! did we only use two subs yesterday?

It's a bit early to condemn teams just yet - I remember the awful start we had 'way back' in the 2003/04 season.....thankfully now just a distant memory!

have to agree with anonymous there he just about sums it up, no decent mid field play to provide the front players with a chance of scoring.

seems to me ollie only wants the glory of scoring & not a team player (shame as if he were to pass the ball he would be a good asset, at the moment when/if he does its to late)

We miss minton/Ty as they are the only players in mid field with vision. Also dobinson making his strong runs into the box in support of front players is missing. Still they can't be injured for much longer i hope.

Even though it was a quite a dull and poor game from both sides I still had fun, the Morecambe fans were great and seemed to be having a good time and it was nice to see two sets of fans enjoying the banter rather than taking offence by it. As far as the way we played goes we were pretty poor. As a side we have lost all of that confidence that kept us going for the few seasons. We seem to be doing well at the back, I don’t think that 11 in 11 games is too bad with only Carlisle conceding less, the problem is up front. With only 3 teams scoring less than us we need to improve. I would like to see junior and boylan playing up front with Gregory sitting just behind them. Gregory has been having some great games recently but the problem comes that when boylan seems to get the ball (usually a hoof) he controls it and because of the marking doesn’t have an outlet. With Gregory and Junior to distribute the ball to it will leave him to get into better positions and do what he does best.

Have got to apologise to my fellow posters, it was me that made the above post – 351385 08.22hrs. With this new set-up and using my laptop, I had not Logged in and went straight into a reply.

BTW its great to see Merv posting once again.

Got to say Merv, I fully agree with your post on the Protheroe thread.

Most definitely think that Favourite players are used rather than those that are at their best for any given game. Perhaps that’s the underlying reason why things aren’t clicking fully with the team at the moment. Having said that, I do think we played better yesterday than we have for a good few recent games.

Agree with Cangull. Although it wasn't a fantastic performance it was better than recent ones.

I thought Gav produced an encouraging display in defence. He won everything in the air and was generally solid.

Sedgemore once again went missing in the second half. He's a quality player but recently has not performed well but he does play a key roll in the team.

I hear Stevenage have severe injury problems at the mo and had to name 8 youth team players in their squad for Saturday's game with York. Fancy us to get something there.

Game spoiled by the wind.

Although we had much of the play, I thought a draw was a fair result given the fine saves from Potter and their near misses to ours. Don’t know where the Midge MoM came from as it was Gavin.

Scoring is a real problem at the moment, but what do you do to correct it? Does Boylan have to come deeper, hold the ball for a bit longer for the midfield to catch up, then lay it off and take up a central position for an intricate pass through? The little flick ons by Greggors are just galloping away from Boylan at the mo who is shielded by two lumps all the time anyway. Thought Ollie got hold of a few balls in the middle but he does not know what to do with it after that.

I think the Greggors flick ons to Boylan or Junior wont to do much damage in future either. We need to get more bodies forward and get to play around their area as we used to, but with caution if this breaks down with a holding central midfielder.

playing more bodies up front will play into the average conf sides away stratergy.. 8 across the back n 2 up front looking to nick something on the break...despite having the wind behind em in the second half morEcaombes only chances came from quick breaks, all we need is that elusive first goal to open things up a bit at home ..

clean sheets can never be critised in our first season at this level..

i cant agree with the criticism of greggors i thought he played well and worked hard.. duffers did ok in the second half and worked his way past what seemed to be three men covering that wing a few times .. paticience is required at this level..

roll on tuesday.. where i have to say i'll be more than happy with a point at stevenage..

I thought we did ok, the wind was quite a factor in the quality of the game. I thought we played quite well in the second half when we played the ball on the deck, got some good moves going down the left and even a few down the right. I think Greggors was ok, certainly won a good deal in the air and linked up play well. We don't seem to quite have the movement or ideas (yet) to break teams down, but we must remember the Conf is a big step up and we have not got off to a bad start - defensively we are not giving much away, it's just not quite happening up front. And what happened with that Greggors shot near the end - was it going in and Ollie headed it wide, or was it off target before Ollie got in the way ? Let's hope we pick up some points this week (and why won't Forest Green agree to change Saturday's game - could be on for our lowest league gate in a long time ?).
