Lee Protheroe. Thanks

From a Fleet fan. Thanks for Lee Protheroe. His calm approach on and off the ball together with his accurate long passes is an asset to the team. His goal from a free kick outside the penalty area was reminiscent of Beckham free kicks. Top right hand corner. Someone must have had a rush of blood to the brain to let him go from Canvey.

Nice of you to post Bill. It seems to happen throughout the entire football pyramid that a player, no matter how good, just doesn't hit it off with one club but moves to another and everything is immediately hunky-dory. It's not just in football either. I have staff who have worked for me and somehow or other, it doesn't seem to work. They move to another establishment and it appears to be a marrieage made in heaven. Proths was always a good player at Park Lane but there is more to a footballing career than turning in a good 90 minutes each week. Clashes of personality in the boardroom, the dressing room or on the terrace is one set of factors, wife not settling into the district, difficult travel arrangements or kids not finding a suitable school is another.

In the end I think you will find most Canvey fans are delighted for Proths that he is again enjoying his football. If he is doing a good job for you, that is a bonus. Canvey got promotion (by a mile) without him and so it seems that everyone is happy.

I agree with Merv on almost every aspect. Shame he had to go to Gravesend though . Great to see you posting again Merv, aint seen ya here in a while! Proths was never going to settle in at Canvey, he always was a good player, too good to sit on a bench week in week out. So, to an extent, I am happy for him. It does however seem to me now that we could do with a player like him in the team to fill in the gaps, no long balls are going to our strikers or anything. Oh well, that's the way football goes I suppose!

Enjoy him, great player and a great bloke.

So doesn't this beg the question, "Why are Canvey trying to play the long ball game?" Overall, I would put the team's apparent lack of success this season not to poor performances from the individual players, but a lack of guidance, tactics and strategies. I haven't seen every game this season, but the ones I have seen so far have had a similar feel to them; good individual performances but an overriding lack of cohesion. Why are players played out of position? Why is the most successful striker for a long time having to do all the creative work, either deep or wide but rarely in the middle? Why are players, who can turn a game around, not brought on until the last minutes? Why do we never look dangerous when awarded a free kick and yet look so vulnerable when we concede one? Why is there such an obvious lack of what to do whenever we take a throw-in? It's my humble opinion that although the players are putting in performances that are at least as good as the oppositions' in most cases, the lack of goals at this level might have something to do with things off the field???

[Oh dear, I feel another ban coming on ]

Hi Merv. Nice to see you posting. I hope you don't mind a Fleet fan on Canveys Forum. But your postings make enjoyable reading, together with making a lot of sense.

Love to see you posting on the Fleet forum sometime. Best Wishes

Good god Merv, not often someone completely takes the words out of my mouth, but I think that's just about done it. And when you said about the free-kicks, ours with an obvious bad outcome, and the opponents looking deadly. The subs always left till the last second. Exactly what i've been meaning to say since the first few games.

Why do we never, ever put a player (or two?) on the post(s)? Look at how many of their freekicks have gone right into the bottom corner.

Also, it seems we have the same problem with corners, we had so many yesterday I was almost sick of seeing them. We probably had more chance of scoring from a goal kick. Every single one went to Gav regardless of where he was in the area. Whereas, when the opponents have one, you have a gut feeling it'll go in.

Im sure most teams don't have problems like this, and this is where the biggest fault is in the team in my opinion, we're not making the most of our chances on the attack.

The wrong players are having to do the wrong things, (i.e. Lee crossing, Duffers shooting.) This isn't how we're supposed to be playing and I can't see it being sorted any time soon.

Do you know something we don't?? Sounds like an episode from "Footballers Wives"

Agree - players can delight one club and frustrate another. I believe Miller is well liked at the shots - presume he is happy plying his trade there.

I have said in a previous post that at one game I had flash backs of the Bishop Stortford game at the beginning of last year - where the fans seemed to realise it wasn't working and were offering suggestions on a team that was "virtually" picked in the next game and it all started to click - the rest is history.

As for personal favourites - I think there is an element of that - although we would all have our "personal favourites" that others do not rate.

Being honest I would not have started Chenners this year - although I don't think he has done to bad. Duffers would not have played towards the end of last year and would not have made my line up this year.

It has also been mentioned that it is easy for us to judge when we are not aware of injuries, player circumstance etc. and I agree with that.

Coaching and tactics - this is the highest Canvey have ever been - and that includes Jeff and Glenn. Can they cope at this level? do they make those decisive substitutions that set certain managers apart? - I don't personally know at the moment. Some of the decisions do seem a little strange - particularly where we have a large squad and seem intent on playing players out of position.

I'm no expert - but we signed McGhee - I felt he was very solid - but from the first couple of games you could see he wasn't the sort of defender to play the ball out to midfield and start a move - he clears it (and clears it very well) by swinging his leg - most seem to refer to it as "hoofing" - now correct me but this doesn't seem to fit in with Canveys natural "flowing style" - so why sign him? (Don't get me wrong I think he's a good player and I'm not knocking him) Can't understand why we didn't sign a defender that suits our style.

Some people have mentioned Greggors - but to be honest he hasn't really impressed me this season. He is very good in the air, but I feel that referees in this league start to read into him being pushed and eventually ignore it or award the decision the other way. I would like to see Dobinson start, but again I think this may be detrimental - it won't be long before he catches the refs'eye and eventually we finish a match with 10 men.

But would I be a manager - would I b****ks.

i reckon glenn has this level more than covered..as was mentioned we all lost it after bishops stortford last season and then it all came together.. its not like we are getting turned over or comprehensivly outplayed.. we are maybe just the wrong side of that fine line that turn draws into the odd win here n there lets not forget this is canvey island we are talking about here.. its supposed to be fun

And what fun it is! Watch your team and win, lose or draw, sit down with a few mates (or log onto the discussion forum) and have your say. With open and honest debate, good humoured banter, the odd pi$$-take and loads if varying and divergent points of view.

Of the 692 paying customers people at Park Lane on Saturday there must be at least 700 different reasons why the scoreline was the way it was.

Now there's another discussion point. Why only 692????

Not seen a Canvey game this season but the old songs are the best

Well remember when Canvey had dodgy spells and the long ball took the place of the rythem section with the odd (accurate) long pass

I always thought it was due to the back 3 or 4 losing the habit of giving it simple to the mid-field, when they gave it long every time they also denied themselves a chance to join in the moves

playing the long ball is a habit difficult to break but for a ball to feet team losing the rythem is the first sign of nerves and they probably need an easy cup draw where they can go out and gain the confidence to "knock it" around for 90 minutes

In fairness there was probably 650 Canvey there which is better than this time last year in the Ryman when we were getting 500-550.
