Enfield 1-2 Grays
Yet another disappointing result. 1-0 up at half-time and cruising. Grant Cooper sent off early in the second half and Grays take control. Nathan Thomas scores two to grap the points.

They shot for goal immediately from kick-off to win a corner which was followed up with a couple of Grant Cooper headers, virtue of perfect Lee Allen free kick deliveries, to put Mel Capelton under early pressure. During the first half hour Enfield were rampant as Oliver Petersen, George Georgiou and Gary Hoy all came close but "Lady Luck" deserted them at the crucial moment. Until his substitution late in the second half, Petersen caused the Grays defence problems with his persistent probing runs. On one such occasion he put Capelton in such a flap that he nearly conceded an own goal but his blushes were saved by the timely intervention of John O'Sullivan who cleared off the goal line.
On the stroke of half time, Enfield finally scored the goal that their play deserved when Petersen crossed for James Ayres to head home from close range.
HT Enfield 1 - 0 Grays Athletic
Enfield started the second half in the same vain. However, the match was turned on its head, after just eight minutes of play, when Cooper was sent off for his second bookable offence. For the next s****** ten minutes or so, Football seemed to be forgotten as bookings flowed like confetti. Once normal business resumed, Grays began to take advantage of the extra man as they slowly, but surely, turned the screw.
On the hour, David Rainford shot from distance, the ball hit the post and rolled along the goal line before the Enfield defence managed to scramble it clear. Grays equalised in the 71st minute when a Nathan Thomas shot, from distance, took a deflection and looped over Millard into the far corner of the goal. He scored a second just six minutes later as, from what looked like an off side position, he beat the unprotected Millard.
As Grays appeared to settle for the points, during the last few moments, Enfield worked their way back into contention. They had chances from debutante Ricky Brown, who grazed the post, Glen Wilkie, Ayres, Georgiou and George Gregoriou but were unable to attain the elusive and, to be honest, deserved equaliser.
FT Enfield 1 - 2 Grays Athletic

[ Back To Fixture List ]
© Copyright Enfield Football Club 2001 Site maintained by Derek Bird .
