Canvey 3 0 Leigh RMI

Five matches unbeaten and just three goals conceded in 6 games. The words solid and difficult to beat spring to mind.

Good performance today against a spirited Leigh side but some of their rough tactics wouldn't have looked out of place on a rugby pitch.

In difficult wet and windy conditions we dominated from start to finish and played some decent football.

It was Wardy who had the best chances in the opening half hour!!!

A long range shot over the bar and a curling cross that caught on the wind and needed to be turned over by Paul Crichton were the nearest we came to scoring in the first 20 minutes.

We won a string of corners and free kicks and from one of them, Jon Keeling floated the perfect ball to Ollie who headed home powerfully.

Ben Sedgemore volleyed an effort wide, and Greggors was off target with a header as we finished the half strongly.

We started the second half superbly. A great move saw Jonnie Keeling released dolwn the left and he finished brilliantly with a great low shot.

We got a little sloppy after that and Leigh had a couple of chances to get back in the game. We still looked dangerous on the break and Gav should have buried an effort from a corner turning the shot just wide.

The referee who had previously had a good game then started to lose the plot. He failed to clamp down on the rough house tactics that Leigh employed and then turned down two decent penalty shouts. The first when Ollie was clearly dragged back after Sedgy's shot was saved and then when Junior had a clear chance on goal.

The third killer goal came on the break when Junior was sent clear in the closing minutes and finished superbly.

A good performance that takes us up to 11th.

Superb displays from Gav, Wardy and Dom at the back. Sedgemore controlled the midfield with Jonnie Keeling having another electric performance.

Up front Greggors was strong and Junior showed alot of skill and great movement at times.

Leigh wern't up to much but still three points and victory over Northwich in our next league game could take us as high as fifth!!

Defensively I think we have improved greatly. I heard someone giving Sterling some stick at York - but he generally worked hard today in crap conditions and got the boot in when needed. Wardy and Cowans also worked hard against a physical Leigh side, particularly the second half when Leigh started to push forward and created a few chances - including one off the bar.

Keeling had a great game - created one and scored one. Junior covered a lot of ground and caused Leigh some problems.

Referee was generally OK - but as you say started to lose it - seemed to coincide with what looked like the Leigh manager and coach having a go at him - presume it was the ref from where I was standing. After that he seemed to lose it. Not sure wheter to call Leigh a "physical" or "dirty" side - a number of times it seemed to flare up. I would say that all the Leigh players were up for it but Karl Rose (9) was definitely committed - and should have been - he was bloody mental.

Ollies header was spot on, as he was left totally unmarked in the box. Looked like Keeling took his effort well and generally caused them problems all day. Junior showed great composure when one on one with the keeper to slot it cooly to the side.

Certainly Canvey are a difficult side to break down - roll on Northwich.

Slight change of subject but after standing in the pouring rain I was a little disheartened to find next weeks game against Hallen was the same price as Conf. games - thought this was a little steep - although I don't know if this is the clubs decision? <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

Probably the FA's unfortunately. Can't see us having a great crowd down there next week but in fairness I'd rather watch us win in front of 400 people than play someone like Hornchurch or Gravesend, get a really decent crowd and get knocked out!!

The real money and media spotlight is gained by getting to the First Round proper and if we beat Hallen, I think there's a lot of league clubs that will want to avoid us right now.

Just seen on the Leigh RMI site that they recorded 7 fouls for Canvey and 16 for Leigh.

However, we managed to get 4 yellow cards to their 2. Keeling and Junior in the 84th and 86th minutes respectively - as mentioned - the ref did start to lose the plot towards the end.

After the next round I hope the media spotlight isn't on a giant killing Hallen side <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/smilewinkgrin.gif" alt="" />

After a workman like performance today I am quietly confident that the players will put in a professional performance - just wonder about the officials <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" />
