I worked on and off in the nationalised industries as a contractor and a bigger shambles never existed anywhere

Open purse budget control, double manning and abuse from monday to monday and that was the public employee!S

When private companies came onboard public interest in budget control was made critical issue no 1 by the very same MPs who had ignored cost previously

Generations of under achieved maintenaince and development became the contractors problem

Nationalisation!! place it with the ground nut scheme,The Dome and bus lanes on motorways

I very much take the point about the nationalised industries, they were far from perfect, but you can't seriously beleive that the privatised utilities are now run efficiently and logically???????

The funniest thing is when you try to get a new construction project off the ground. If the project is on existing premises - a new school classroom block for example - the hardest bit is trying to find out who supplies the gas and/or electricity! Then of course they shipper, as they are amusingly called, is not the same firm who owns the pipelines or the cables..... but they might have that work subcontracted to them......

I have known building contracts delayed considerably while the paperwork went round and round between all these idiots. They are actually exactly the same guys as before, but with different names over their doors and profits bing creamed off.

Nationalisation is damn straight what we should be doing and is certainly what a supposed "socialist" government should be doing rather than selling the tube down the shitter as well.

There is no ideological difference in modern politics. The Conservatives, Liberals and Labour all stand in the same centre ground and try to pander to the left and right of their own parties and public opinion. No wonder there is so much voter apathy.

As for the privatised utilities it is a farce. Twenty different water companies try and sell you the water through some other buggers pipes. Madness.

And if you privatise an industry that should be the end of it. Yet they still get government hand-outs. Plain wrong.

I will now step off my soapbox.

A couple of points invis, Many of the major problems lay with how the units were franchised out and the inability therefore to fault find or give a complete service by the groups, secondly the contracts were given to companies who were cobbled together for that franchise, that scenario could not function as to run public sectors that big takes above all knowledge and experience

And yes too many of the "same guys " as before involved I.E they failed as natioalised industry and were certain failures as private enterprise

The transfer from public to private was essential but should have taken several years not a politically expedient couple of years

  • 2 weeks later...

nationalised industries dont work, or if they do they dont make a profit.. they piss money up the wall..

look at the nice private telecommunications industry.. not perfect but lots of choice and its quick to change.. anyone remember b.t?

as for the glory days of british rail.. sorry but was a commuter in the 80's it was worse than it is now on the fen st and liverpool st lines. much worse..

cant really comment on water firms etc other than a few hundred tons of sewage in the thames makes big news now, other than someone finding something alive in it that isnt a rat..

just privatise everything.. education health the lot, get the dead hand of government out of everything.. except the law, defence and er umm thats about it really apart from maybe some enviromental regulations.. any other stuff can be done at county level..

in fact its good old labour that is privatising the law.. the very thing it should be most concerned about keeping central control of ..

i can really see those new 'not real coppers' coppers having an affect on crime.. the only people they will bother will be old biddies j walking or something

I used to commute by train into the teemimg metropolis every day from early 1975 and very very rarely was there a problem. You could rely on the service.

Now you can expect there to be a problem on a good 50% of journeys, it's pathetic.

The Thames was cleaned up before privatisation.

Rats have rights too you know... to be honest it's pigeons I hate.
