Utter Disgrace

What an utter disgrace, it has been a long time since I have seen such a poor performance. To be annihilated by such a mediocre team is despicable, and that is all Aldershot were today mediocre. And there will be people coming on this web site saying how the ref was terrible (true but aren’t they always) that Aldershot constantly fouled our players (we have played them enough to know they do that), but the simple fact of the matter is we were truly terrible and the 4-0 score line flattered us. From the start we looked like we were playing for a draw, sitting back not chasing balls down and relying on Aldershot’s inability to do much, and hopefully drag the game back to park lane. But for that to work you cant give away the most stupid goal in the opening minutes of the first half. After that we all expected the Canvey spirit to come through. All we got instead was a half hearted attempt to mill around in the centre of the filed where we promptly gave every ball away and made no shots, now I know we were missing some key players but before I walked out 5 minutes from the end we had had one shot on goal and that was so wide it nearly went for a throw (I hear we did make the keeper touch the ball in the dieing minutes but I couldn’t verify this). And when our tactics clearly weren’t working we done absolutely sod all about it. There was not a single area that we done well in.

I’m not one to moan on about the team but today I had to leave early to stop me booing them off the pitch. I couldn’t think of anything positive on the long train ride home to take from this. I had visited a sh*t ground, watched us play sh*t against a sh*t team in sh*tty cold weather after a sh*tty journey.

Overall rating SH*T

Our Ground makes yours look like a sunday league pitch you tit. Your fans are pathetic and so is your team (Dom excepted. Why don't you give us the credit we deserve for playing the right kind of game against your team and knowing how to beat you?

You must have got lost and went to Farnborough!!

The shots--best team, best ground, best supporters. Great goals, great atmosphere. Ref a knob and your no.22 a donkey!!

Couldn't make the game today and wasn't able to listen to the commentary on the radio.

Just got back and not sure what to make of it all except that the shots were a better organised side tactically in the second half.

First thing that struck me was the line up.

Presume some of those that started were covering possible injuries?

Wardy and Midgely were named in the squad but didn't even make the bench by looks of it.

I must admit I thought the squad had started to settle slightly over the past month, but it seemed like all change today with Joseph, Smith and I suppose for me Duffy starting again.

The player that seems to be getting mentioned the most is Peter Smith (Nr 22), particularly on the Shots forum. Was he trying a little to hard or is the shots description of "donkey" more apt?

Gutted about the result, but it sounds like Shots did the business and we deserved absolutley nothing this afternoon.

As for Hereford - well after watching us at Northwich and reading about today - I think we will seriously need to get our act together and the players need to get their [****!!****] into gear if we are going to get anything out of that game. <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/sad.gif" alt="" />

When we arrived early and saw the players warming up, we thought, where’s Wardy, where’s JK(Kennedy), where’s Junior, why’s Midgely not warming up with the main bunch.

From the Ceefax pre match news, we did not have just our main goalscorer out, but a whole host of key men and thought this will be even tougher than we thought.

After some early scares, where I believe Danny did not have to make a save, we suddenly got into the game half way through the first half. The tackles were good and we were bringing the ball up the pitch as a unit with Duffy advancing forward and Buzz exploiting space on the right.

They got back in it towards the end of the first half but no one would believe what would happen in the second half as they walked. In fact, I wished they had just carried on the game.

We missed the goal at the start of the second half as we were finishing our chocolate and then witnessed one way traffic thereafter.

Just could not believe it as the battling suddenly went, we weren’t winning the second ball, the football went and we didn’t have one shot, what I saw anyway.

That early goal must of just killed us and perhaps plans of soaking up the pressure and trying to nick a goal were out the window and there was no way back.

They looked good in the end but its easy to look good when your tails are up and the other side’s are down. You play a different game when you have your noses in front.

Just ome of those days when from the outset, it was clear it was going to be very difficult. Expecting Buzz and Matt to play straight back into the cauldron was too much to expect and Jeff is still regaining match fitness.

Just a mention that I thought Buzz was great today.

That Maclean played well when I saw him at Park Lane two seasons ago and he has not lost his pace or commitment. That guy led the line so well and got hold of everything. I don’t know why QPR are signing Miller when in fact this player should easily be in league football.

From this, you could see that this team is a benchmark if you want to attempt to drive for promotion and a major player and ground transition would have to occur for this to become a reality.

When we play them next, I suggest we play 4 at the back as they were swarming over us with 3.

Must hand it to Terry Brown that I thought he has bought wisely and will be surprised if this team aren’t thereabouts at the end.

The only nagging doubt though was didn’t we really cave in and made them look better as we held them in the first half.

Cheers Phil Old Boy, gives me a better idea of what went on today - more of an idea than I got from the official site.

Out of interest, from anyone who was there today, how did Sedgemore and Mints link up? - difficult to say they complimented each others style when you lose 4-0, but I am curious.......certainly sounds as though our midfield were being over run in the second half.

Be interesting to hear other views from today as there are many different opinions.

Sometimes I read posts about players doing well and haven't really noticed them during a game.

Again thought Ben done okay in the first half but was quieter and got a knock in the second half and went off.

Jeff had the ball on occasions but done okay only in parts. Needs some more games. Can't remember any real linkages between Ben and Jeff.

God was we overun and it was wave upon wave in the second half. You could not see how we have had a good defensive record up to now. That's 7 conceeded in 2, which has dented that stat.

Perhaps we need to go back a bit and start tighteneing up the defence which also means doing something in midfield also. We have players that like to get forward as you should but for us perhaps this has a bad effect when we have to defend.

Didn't go yesterday because of work committments. I guess Wardy was injured. There is no way he woul have been dropped as he has been our best defender this season. Peter Smith is certainly not a conference player andwill get caught out time and again. I just pray Wardy is back next week.

Anyone know what his injury is?

All I said is that shots were mediocre and that their ground was sh*t. They were mediocre I have seen shots play many times and they were quite poor against Canvey they can play a lot better. Luckily for them Canvey we were diabolical. As far as the ground goes it is terrible. Big does not mean good (and at no point did I say canveys was good but at least it is not falling apart) Aldershot’s ground is a good ground that has been neglected and I don’t think anyone can disagree with that. As far as giving Aldershot credit for the victory I think the few Canvey fans that turned up could have beaten the Canvey team that day. the Aldershot fans were good on the day and the ones I spoke to were friendly and nice, just a shame that the morons who posted on this thread cant read my post properly at no point did I slag them off! My comments of Canvey played badly (I don’t think anyone can argue) shots ground is sh*t didn’t say canveys was better just theirs is sh*t (god even the shots fans I spoke to agree with that)) and that it was a cr*p game (maybe conceding 4 goals influenced that) learn to read dim wits

Ken.

Did you think we done okay in the first half?

I was quite encouraged the way we battled back into the game after they threatened, but did not test Potter in the first 20 mins. When they walked off at half time, could anyone predict what would happen in the next 45.

God knows what happened but I assume that the fashion of the goal, which I heard about and did not see, just killed us, though that should not happen. Aldershot seemed like they were on fire but only the team knew what happened. Again, its easy to look good when you are in front.

May be wrong but goalwise, was that our worst FA Cup defeat?

We just have to battle on now in this close division where success and failure are a fine line.

Good luck to Aldershot in the next round, the better team won on the day.

Don`t think we have ever folded so badly after going behind. Sometimes you can get away with one or two players having an off day but when it`s most of the team you`ve got no chance.

I thought we soaked up the pressure well in the first half and should have at least tested their keeper when we broke away but no one seems to want to shot from outside the box anymore, i believe our only shot on target in the whole game was from Jason Hallett in injury time.

I can live with Aldershots first goal anyone can make a mistake, but when a player has the time and space to score the second it`s not good enough. After that we chased the game an left gaps all over the pitch and without Potter making a couple of good saves it could have been six.

No doubt there was a big inquest after saturday, hopefully we can put this behind us and get a result against Hereford.

Official web site mentions a friendly on Tuesday against Pitsea and Bowers - intersetingly it says "first team" - due to the last two performances possibly?

Midfield - I would like to see Sedgemore have more of a crack at goal. He seems to hold that central area - he's not defensive midfield (sounds like we could have done with this on Saturday) and doesn't have a good go at goal like Mints - he switches the ball very well and always tries to play others through without having a crack himself.

I spoke to Ken on Saturday night and he was very upset with tke performance of the team. I have actually never heard him that disappointed since i've known him.

Couldn't make the game on Saturday but with what Ken told me, Jeff got the tactics completly wrong in the second half. Now i am not usually a critic of his choices but sometimes when the going gets tough, Jeff seems to do something out of the ordinary and it never works.

Ken mentioned that he took off Berquez when he was the only one who looked like he had a chance of scoring. Surely it should have been Gregory. Time and time again he uses that backing in to people technique and i just think that teams like Aldershot know that he is gonna do this by now and anticipate it. I was informed that Gregory did this all day and it produced f*ck all! Surely a change in tactic from Jeff about this would benefit the team if every other team expects Gregory to do this? I am a fan of Gregory when he plays well but even i'm tired of this tactic.

Dont get me wrong, i am not criticising Gregory at all. He is a great player and he DOES contribute a lot to Canvey.

I just think we need a serious think about where the team has it's weaknesses because after that display on Saturday, we need to be stronger, especially with the games against Hereford and Aldershot coming up. We cant afford to make mistakes against these because as someone said earlier, there is a fine line in this league between the play-offs and relegation!
