No overtaking for lorries on Motorways.

Did you all hear the story on the radio, about Lorries not being able to overtake on the motorway.

 

They are going to try it out on a m/way in the Birmingham area, from memory but don't quote me on it, think it was M42.

 

If sucessful it could go through the network, a bloke, a lorry driver phoned up and said it will lead to increase in prices due to late delivery of goods.

 

That are the details that were on the radio.

 

What are peoples views on this?

If this is true....have fun trying to get off Motorways when indignant Lorry Drivers are driving nose to tail and refuse to leave a gap for you to use.......Nearl as mad as Maggies proposed outside lane for toll payers only....You just couldn't make it up!!!!!(where is JR when you need a witty reply?).

That's what they have just said on the radio. It is to be tested first. I expect Lorry drivers to cause some kind of protest. Not very good timing, christmas deliveries for your local Tesco, Sainsburys etc. Especially if you live in Birmingham, but would of thought that they will get national support from other drivers.

Speed of delivery is rarely important. It's the continuous supply that matters. In other words if you need to shift 20 lorry loads of stuff from A to B every day, or even lots of B's, it doesn't matter how fast they go provided 20 lorries leave and 20 lorries arrive.

 

Of course there could be an issue with the long distance runs as the drivers can only drive for X hours a day (is it 8?).

 

In theory they should be nicked for driving too close, especially if they do it on purpose. Obvioulsy nigh-on impossible to police though. And are the old bill really that keen on whizzing up and down motorways looking for overtaking lorries?

 

I suppose it might only work if there was a minmum speed as well. Anything that couldn't trundle along at at least say 50 would have to have a police escort, and you'd be allowed to overtake it.

 

So it's a nice idea but I can't really see it working in practice.

Isn't 40 the minimum on Motorways?

Lorries overtaking can be annoying, but personally I think there are greater hazards to road safety that need policing, and there are other ways to improve traffic flow that might work. Although, come to think of it, most of those involve changing the way the public think about the way they use their vehicles and the way they drive.

And with regard to the post about 20 lorries leaving point A and so on, somebody once espoused that the canals were a perfectly good way to move non-perishable goods as you can have 20 barges leaving point A and so on.....

I think it's a bloody fantastic idea- in fact it'd be even better if they made them a seperate road network that only HGV's can use. Nothing more ridiculous than seeing 1 lorry trying to overtake another and taking about 5 minutes to do so, holding everybody else up in the process. While we're at it ban motorbikes and cyclists from the road as well.

While it can be annoying on motorways - and dangerous, as it causes bunching, but as Badger rightly observes that is only dangerous when people drive badly - lorries overtaking is more of a problem on 2 lane motorways and "A" roads, where they effectively block the whole road.

most lorrys/coaches etc are fitted with speed limiters, which means that even if they stick the pedal to the metal, they cant exceed a certain speed...indeed, our coach driver today seemed to have his limiter stuck on 45. we were very nearly overtaken by a tractor, ffs!

 

if 'they' could stick something similar and limit the minimum speed, so even if the lorry driver had both feet on the steering wheel, the thing went at a minimum of 50-60, then it could work, but if you try to impose something on these people that they dont want, it will not happen.

 

lorrys can cause total havoc - french blockades etc.

 

remember during the fuel crisis a few years back where a convoy of lorries took up all 3 / 4 lanes of the M25 & various other motorways up & down the country and did a 'go slow'

 

it aint that broke - dont fkn fix it.

One simple way to ease congestion is to get the big money winners such as tescoe etc to make deliveries via mororways after 8pm and before 0600am

If we are to ban overtaking, then at least we should have an extra "inside" lane built ~ so that instead of the faster vehicles pulling out to overtake, the slower vehicles can pull in to "undertake" !

Have a look on the side of motorways at night and you will see loads of HGVs parked up with their drivers having reached the end of their legal limit on the tacho!s, they then rejoin the m-ways whilst every one else is attempting to get to work

If you then turn to the motorway you will not see loads of sainsbury, M & S, tesco, boots etc etc HGVs, why not because they make deliveries during daylight hours

Make the HGVs travel overnight and deliver overnight, costly? of course but they can afford the staff on shift

The only problem is this governments dubious linkage to big business
