Un-happy with Hospital.

Recommended Posts

For those of you who know my Dad's situation, will not need me to go through it again, Stomach Cancer etc.

Yesterday he was struggling with his breathing, my mum called a Dr, the Dr was so concerned he called an ambulance, racing through the 6 miles of traffic blue lights, flashing, concerned Paramedics, obviously very urgent.

They arrive at the Hospital and they put him on Oxygen, this was at 5pm, (yesterday) he had not seen a Hospital Dr by midnight, my mum is still with him at midnight, and she says can she stay, the response she gets is, well it could be another 5 hours and to call back at 10am.(today) so she goes home by taxi.

She phones back this morning, but they still don't know what the uck is going on, she has been stewing all night and now getting a taxi back down there.

Surely an emergency deserves quicker response time. <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" />

I lived through similar with my old Mum (G,R,H,S) and the entire situation is barbaric, crude and inhuman

First priority is Mum and Dad but on the side give your MP bloody hell and if you are not good at the verbal and written assaults practise the written until you have the letter you want to send The verbal assault? get in front of your MP and say what you would say to a mate,go for it

Ok, I may be wrong, but as I live in Braintree - Mid / North Essex and my parents live in Southend wouldn't an mp from my area say it is nothing to do with him and an mp from my parents area say, they can't discuss an area where I do not live with me.

Maybe I should do something under my mum's name ask her what she wants to say, type it up and send it off for her.

The problem is nobody (any MP that is) really want!s to know but you may strike lucky if Teddy Taylor is your Mums MP, he is a genuine man who would be interested, check out the local southend papers for his surgery nights and attempt to get to see him, go for it

Mark, all the best to you and your family. Know what you're going through with Southend Hosp - I went through a similar situation a few months ago with my brother-in-law. I ended up playing nurse and giving him his medication and taking him too loo!! (he is an uncontrolled epileptic and was in a kind of coma).

Trouble was no one would listen to our complaints and as my sister is also registered blind I couldn't be troubled to take it any further.

Once we had got past the A&E the service was excellent so keep fighting.

Try and chill i'm sure all will be fine.

Hi Mark.

I have only just read your couple of threads on here. I hope that things are looking up. [Did you ever buy that book, by the way?]

A quick observation. Last year, my mother was in Southend General Hospital where the 'front line' care from the nursing staff is fantastic. Without going into detail as it's not relevant, I wasn't happy with the level of support at Doctor and Admin. level. I checked with a couple of people I know, who have inside knowledge of the NHS who confirmed that the entire system is geared to frustrate those who wish to make any form of complaint. However, they did suggest that the hospitals tend to jump about a bit when the local MP shows an interest.

By co-incidence, my mother is a constituent of David Amess.

I telephoned him at Westminster and spoke to his secretary. I outlined the problem and she asked me to put the position to him in writing by fax or E-mail [whatever that is]. This was at 10.30 in the morning. I did.

When I went to visit Mumsie in hospital that evening, I was greeted with a big smile. "What have you been doing?", says she to me, "The nurses say that you have been on the warpath." "No problemo," says I, "I just thought that we needed a little outside assistance."

Anyway. It turned out that Mr Amess had contacted the Chief Executive of Southend Gen. and my mother was seen by 3 different doctors within 1 hour following. She was discharged the next day. [the nurses were delighted that the doctors had, indeed, been made to jump about, by the way.]

Good news for Mumsie and, hopefully, for me as I may be re-instated into the will, but what's pathetic about that story is that I have a reasonable level of intelligence and I can articulate to a reasonable standard when I choose. There are an awful lot of people out there who don't and can't and they are jerked around by the system all the time.

Anyway, Mark. I hope that you will find the same level of response from David Amess and, more importantly, that your folks are back with you soon.

Good luck once again from me.

Thanks AFF, the thing in our situation that is hard to understand is that the nurses worked 24th, 25th, 26th, 27th, 28th (The bank holidays) but the Dr's don't.

My Dad's situation on top of his fluid on the lung situ, he has contracted the hospital bug, I was told 5 wards closed, Mand and I so wanted to visit them yesterday, told no. Hopefully tomorrow.

Christmas is one thing, Mark. It's the golf every Friday from 11 am and then every week-end off that bothered me!!

My No 2 son had a minor operation on his shoulder just before Christmas to correct a rugby injury in the BUPA hospital locally. The doctors there don't play golf. They are working all hours. I wonder if it's a salary thing?

Good luck with your folks, Mark.
