Cheshunt 2(1)-0(0) Enfield
Thursday 25th July 2002

Cheshunt achieved a 2-0 victory in a "game of two halves", winning each half 1-0 by virtue of scoring a goal just seconds before the whistle!

Enfield dominated the first period but it was The Ambers who attained the upper hand when, just seconds before the interval, Stewart Jones beat Michael Kalli with a 20-yard drive. For the preceding 44 minutes the Enfield custodian did not have a single shot to save.

The lively newcomer Paul Armstrong, recently signed from Stevenage Borough, had a hand in virtually every Enfield attack and, with a little more luck, could have had a hatful. He showed his intent as early as the second minute when he screwed a shot just wide of the far post. Just a couple of minutes later he hit a shot just over the bar.

His strike partner Mark Boyce also caused the Cheshunt rearguard a number of early problems which culminated in a penalty being awarded in the 7th minute when he was fouled in the area. Stuart Maynard hit a rather tame spot kick which the new Cheshunt goalkeeper, Russell Ling (from Leyton Pennant), saved with ease. Less than five minutes later, Maynard was on the end of a fine move which involved both Boyce and Armstrong but was, once again, denied by Ling. Ling continued to frustrate Enfield as he made further saves from Armstrong (twice) and Warren Waugh.

Cheshunt stemmed the blue and white tide for the final 10 minutes of the half before pinching the lead through Jones.

Team: Kalli, Hoy, Braithwaite, Preece, Reddington, Coppard, Maynard, Boyce, Armstrong, Waugh, Clarke

For the second period, The E's made a number of changes - they changed the whole side - and, as a contest, it was a far more even, if slightly dour, affair which was played almost exclusively in the middle third.

Cheshunt had a few chances but Kenny Addai was not unduly worried. With seven minutes remaining, The E's had two very good opportunities to have at least levelled the contest. Jeff Hammond made a strong run into the Cheshunt area, evading a couple of defenders, before being stopped in his tracks by goal keeper Gary Gafill. This was quickly followed by a Michael Ross shot which hit the post and rebounded to safety.

Like the first period, Cheshunt scored in the dying seconds as Glen Parry slot home from the penalty spot.

Team: Addai, Peddie, Turner, Abbott (Fenton), Gant, Burnett, Hussain, Okafor, Hammond, Ross, Scott
