Fred the Bugle

Recommended Posts

The infamous Canvey island Bugler is currently in Hospital following an operation to remove his bladder (due to the big C ).

I go in to visit him reguarly and i know he would appreciate any comments or messages of support, (I will print them off for him to look at).

He is recovering well from the op and hopes to be back over Park Lane in about 3 weeks or so.

He did ask the Doctor "Will I be able to play the bugle after the op?"

The Doctor replied "Yes."

Fred replied "thats good cos I can't play it now".

Within every group of fans there are the non-descript regulars who tend to blend into the background and then there are the unusual, the generally eccentric and the totally barmy. Not sure which one of these categories Fred fits into, but he sure isn't non-descript. He is sorely missed at The Lane. The lack of normal musical services will, hopefully, be resumed as soon as possible. Get well soon, Mate.

Again, I don't know Fred personally, but wish him all the best in his recovery.

He certainly makes his presence felt at games and makes up for the sometimes quiet Yellow Army not only at the Lane but away from home as well.

I still remember the York game when after Freds first half repertoir - the announcer at half time gave a mention of "the away support of 107" a pause and then added "and 1 trumpet" - classic.

All the best Fred - how about learning a few new tunes though whilst your recovering Suppose anything along the lines of Oasis would suit Yellow.........

Are they supposed to be tunes Fred plays then?

Like the others, I don't know you personally Fred, but I always hear you and you have become one of the characters. I did wonder why I didn't hear you today, you illness explains it.

I hope you get better soon and can't wait to hear your "tunes" floating out over the pitch. Get well soon mate.....

Fred - get better, get practising and then get back, we need you!

I reckon it would have been 4-0 yesterday if the Boogie-Woogie Bugle boy had been working his magic.

Best wishes Fred, you do not know me, but like everyone at the lane (I never thought I would ever say this) I hope to hear you soon. The poem below was written by a 19 year old boy to his brother who fought and beat cancer, I hope it might help lift you a bit.

"Alone"

Nineteen and all alone, visions of things all gone wrong, hoping and praying this disease will go away, knowing for now it is here to stay.

Just to find a few friends in passing, wishing they will be true and everlasting.

Sometimes alone and so afraid trying to figure out why its stayed.

Trying to move on in every hour and fight with all our power. moving on each day learning more and wanting to stay.

Never give up and never stop trying for you like me are to young to be dieing.

I must move on, do just as I do, we know this plan can work for you.

When the tubes of life run through your veins, forget about your sorrows and your pains.

Look up for tomorrow and begin to live, you like me have so much to give.

Be strong my friend and keep moving on, I know I'm preaching but this can't be wrong.

Today is a new day so please don't abuse it, if you do it will be gone and we will lose it.

So to you my friend lets step up to the plate once again, you're feeling alone but you're not, keep up the fight give it all ya got.....

Dont let the doctor examine you naked, make him put some clothes on first.

Sending you Get Well Wishes.

Thanks everyone for the messages, I took most of them up to the hospital today, (I will take the rest of them tomorrow).

Fred was visibly moved by the messages of support and asked me to thank you all for your support. It was surprising just how much reading the messages cheered him up. Thank you all so much.

Fred also said he want to play his trumpet badly, I told him he already does.

As for Marcus, Stacy and the other fairweather supporter, your supposed to keep the Santa thing quiet..... (Fred dresses as Santa Claus and visits the children of family and friends every Christmas, he really is a larger than life character).

Thanks once again, keep those messages flooding in though...
