Daggers game

Poor game, but the better side won. Thought that you actually got worse when Junior "why shoot when you can pass" McDougald came on.

Pleased to see Smith gift us a goal minutes after he had been abusing Daggers fans

Canvey were awful last night. For me players to go are :

Duffy

Smith

Chenery

Kennedy

Gregory

Joseph

Ward

Potter ??

We simply can't defend and we rely on scoring more than we conceed. In this division and without Boylan that is a no win strategy.

kennedy should play out wide not in the middle ..

no need to rush into changing anything..

consistancy in this league and away form are a lot harder to aqquire.. our recent home form has been good ..

as long as we stay up.. i dont think wholesale changes are a good thing.. we havnt made em before why start now..

i cant see why anyone wants to lose duffers ..

smith n chenners maybe..

greggors is good for another season

minton still to come back in to the team

lee will still need a few games to get back up to speed..

and then bring in one or two new players as n when ..

another factor to remember is a lot of players at this level will want full time footy or of they are tasty league two wages..

no rush this season, its all about staying up and learning the ropes

we need to sort out the defense, potter is a fantastic keeper but we need a defense that can keep up with the speed of the opposition. you have to build a squad from the back forward and we need to stop conceding goals. and I don't think any of our defenders are really good enough. maybe with a quality defender commanding the back then a few of them will be able to cope. but until we get that we will struggle

To be fair to Anonymous (not sure which one) a couple of people that I have spoken to do not rate Potter as highly as most - mainlybecause of his height and his positioning during set pieces.

IMHO - I think he is definitely a player whom the squad can build around. Great shot stopper and brilliant with one on one situations. I feel he commands his area fantactically - he always seems to have a great raport with Dominic - he struggles with some of the other defenders because they don't bloody listen or do as he asks, particularly Chenners - so not Potters fault.

I feel that Kingy needs to let go some of his loyalties if we are to progress next season.

Don't feel we need to rush into anything at the moment - just need to keep an eye on the clubs below us mainly FGR and Farnborough - Daggers could do us a favour Saturday - although sods law says they will balls that one up.

Sorry CanvEFM, feel that Greggors is one of the players who should move on at the end of the season. I reckon Jeff should start taking a look at options for next year, rather than throwing a new squad together in the summer. I also have a feeling that most of the squad that may well appear next year haven't been signed yet and like Crawley there will be a fair clear out towards the end of the season, if we are safe, and over summer.

I don't get to many games but went to Crawley and first half I thought we played well, generally passed the ball to feet, worked both flanks, made some chances and probably should have gone in 2-0 up. Second half however was very different as we mostly resorted to hoofball, which we have repeatedly shown we are no good at ! Playing a style which does not suit you (and is dire to watch) will always make a team look poor. That said, I do think we need another striker as we struggle without Boylan - not just for goals but for his general link-up play. I guess the tricky bit is finding players who are (a) better than what you have and (B) willing to play for Canvey (money, part-time status, location ,etc). Things are not likely to change in the near future, and we have some crucial games coming up (Northwich this month, Leigh and Burton in March) in which we must get some points so let's get behind the players we have for now.

Canv cant see why you would want to keep Greggors, he is A HALF A GAME PLAYER and little else.

Anon you twazock

"Potter is a good shot stopper but he does not command his area and he takes risks.......and if he is injured ...??????"

First he commands his area better than almost all non league keepers.

Second great shot stopper.

Third best kicker at this level.

and as for you comment "if he gets injured??"

DUH!!! if we let him go it would not matter how injured he was. I agree we need cover as Ash aint up to it, but then we need to look at youngsters.

Good summary Exile - especially point B.

Do people feel Canvey can progress when the factors attracting players are, amongst others, money, part-time status and location? discuss.....

IMO - whilst Jeff still funds the club money may not be a critical factor - although I don't suppose he'll go mad - and we don't have the financial burden that full time clubs incur.

We have managed to attract some quality part time players who specifically don't want to go full time - John Keeling and Dominic Sterling for example - the club just need to be shrewd about whom they sign.

As for location, I feel we are in a prime area of the country - I don't suppose we will be at the top of every prospective players top part-time non-league clubs list. However, I feel with our more recent rise up the leagues we are in an area where we can pick up some good quality part time players such as Keeling and Dominic etc.

Any other views?

having the ground at waterside would save any player about 20 mins traveling a day getting on and off the island.. and obviously the better facilities that go with it..

i think we need bigger crowds as well even if they arnt the be all and end all of funding at the moment ..

greggors is a 65 min player at the moment because he has to spend 65 minute chasing [censored] balls pumped forward then wrestle with the average conf centre back gorillas and get booted all game..

if he wasnt on the park then anything that is lamped forward would be even more wasteful than it is now..

playing 'football' to feet is a great plan and we can be good at it on our day, but we cant dominate teams in this league .. when your up against it for large spells of the game sometimes only a hoof will do and unless you know of a better target man at the club than greggors will be the one busting his balls to get on the end of em

I agree CANV - greggors may be slowing up a bit but we would be looking a bit sick without him as a target. Danny is a good keeper and great entertainment when the chips are down too.

Personally I think we're missing the midfield more than anything - Dobbo, Mints (Parms???!!!) Noone seems to have touched on this yet - any views?

Greggors is a great servant of the club and continues to be a good player who does bust his [****!!****] when the chips are down and other players are looking around. He still provides service to Lee when others do not.

However, as mentioned on other threads, if you want to move on in this league you need to be ruthless with some of the players that have got you this far.

CanvEFM - you've got to stop the greggors luv affair one day - it can't last forever - bit like Busted.

I glanced through the squad and obviously we don't have a natural tall forward to replace Greggors - however, I hadn't booked his place in the OAP home just yet. We just need to start looking and planning for a replacement as the only thing I disagree with you on is "another season" - what about Chenners becoming a target man? he played in midfield against Bath - why not a forward (only joking Jeff if your reading this!)

As you say CanvEFM - Greggors is being mullered by big Conference gorillas - nothing is going to change in that respect next year. We may need to look at playing "football" so Greggors isn't running around chasing the long ball - but he will still struggle against these gorillas next year for pace. His natural game is not being climbed over and thumped in the back of the neck by some ape - which is how a lot of Conf teams seem to play.

As for Anon - yep your right we do need to look at other areas. Midfield has been weak at times. However, IMO some of this is down to those that pick the team. How many midfielders and combinations have we been through this season? Williamson keeps getting dropped, Sedgemore could only play one half when he arrived, JK looks lost at times and is played more centrally instead of wide, which does him no favours - lets see how Mario gets on. Probably see him a few times and then he will disappear as well. Anyone know when Mints is due back?

If we don't want to play hoofball then we need defenders who can play rather than keep belting it clear - or does our midfield allow our defense to be over ran, so kick bo***k and bite is their only option when under so much pressure.

IMO if we want to have a fair crack at this league next season then we will need quite a few new players and in all areas of the pitch - except goal.
