Bishop's Stortford

YELLOW

Recommended Posts

What a pile of complete and utter [****!!****]! First 20 minutes were excellent after that we didn't want to know and if Stortford could finish better we would have been looking at an embarrasiing exit from the Trophy.

They wanted it more than us, played some good football and were hungry. At times we had no fcking clue, the defence was woeful and at time it looked as if we couldn't give a damn.

We thought we could turn up and win like that. How wrong we were. At least we have a replay but we'll probably [****!!****] that up as well.

Bloody angry at the mo. When I've calmed down I'll write something constructive.

Ignoring the danger of really annoying Dave Wallace (who simply can’t bear to hear any criticism of Canvey FC and thinks everything I ever wrote was ‘crap’) that was a truly dreadful performance. When Canvey went 2 – 0 up within 10 minutes I honestly thought that normal service had been resumed; how wrong can you be. Whereas I accept that Stortford raised their game today, the simple truth is far too many Canvey players were found wanting. Apart from Danny at the back and Lee up front, there were not enough players showing any sort of passion, commitment or desire. We were too slow, we lost possession too easily, we lacked creativity but more important than all, we simply didn’t appear to want it. I know that the beauty of the Cup/Trophy is that teams from a lower league can cause upset (that’s how we won it in 2001) but that does not explain why Canvey were so inept today.

Let’s hope that Jeff and Glen can give the players some sort of boost before Tuesday’s replay. Or is it the ‘off the pitch’ performance that is the real cause of Canvey’s poor form this season.

wasn't at the game so can't comment on it but it doesn't sound too good. I presume from the line-up given on the official website that Lee played on his own up front (assuming the line-up given is correct). If that's right, did it have any bearing on the tactics/performance ?

The only minor consolation is that results went for us in the league - of the teams below us only Leigh won (second game running !) so probably a good job our game there on Tuesday will have to be rescheduled. Let's hope we buck our ideas up for the replay and make it to the next round (at least we can't be drawn away to Carlisle).

Agree with Merv, we showed no passion today and didn't seem to want it. Credit to Stortford. They played some excellent football and their striker Morison was a real handful at times. How they did not win I do not know.

Admittedly we hit the bar on at least 4 occasions and if Mario had scored just after we scored the second that would have been it.

I think it was never going to be our day when Lee struck the bar after a great pull back and then Mints shot came back off the bar and didn't fall right for Greggors.

I've calmed down but I was pretty pissed off with the performance today. I've seen a couple of Conf South games this season and the standard is not that good. At 2-0 up we should have had the game won but instead decided we were going to play like muppets against a mediocre side. A repeat on Tuesday and we can kiss goodbye to any thoughts we had on returning to Villa Park.

I as always saw it a bit different, Danny was excellent and Lee had a good game.

We went down too easy under the tackle and, did not show the desire to win, but we did not play that bad. We seemed to get dragged down to their level a bit though.

It was one of those days where even with them getting chances I never thought we would lose and looked at the draw even when we were 2 - 0 up.

I always felt we were the better team and played some lovely little touches, but it just was not gonna happen.

Danny Brill

Duffers made some lovely runs

Boylan looked sharp

Mario made a few mistakes but played some nice football.

Greggors and Ollie did not add anything when they came on.

Sedgmore did not seem to have a big imapct on the game.

Minton looked like he was on his way back.

I really believe 5/4 - 1 on tuesday.

This was their cup final and a good day out for them. A better team would have punished us but, we werent playing a better team and that reflected in our play and we played very deep.

Ollie coming on like a nutter climbing on peoples backs and kicking players up in the air we are better than that so is he.

Greggors used his ussual falling over in front of the defender trick to no effect. I actually heard the lino say I ve seen that before.

Kind of agree. When one of their forwards misssed a virtual open goal after Danny messed up, I couldn't see them scoring again. It was a strange day in the sense we got the luck in defence with them missing chances but up front the ball wouldn't bounce for us.

Think we'll win the replay and if we do we'll look on this as a lucky escape. With the likes of Crawley, Dagenham and Forest Green losing at home to lower opposition in this tournament maybe a draw was not such a bad result.

We'll definitely need to play better to get through.

for me there ony seemed like 3 players who could of come off the pitch happy with there game thats dan,lee and dave mcghee my man of the match.what i did find scary was how easy there striker kept going past wardy and just how bad our crosses from wide positions were

Agree. Dave McGhee was excellent and should get a regular starting place.

Mcghee was excellent yesterday. iv said it befor and ill say it again, he SHOULD be our captain. he is a real leader and doesnt start enough. Mints has been the captain our last couple of games and he is just far to quiet to be a captain.

Danny was limping during the game so hopefully he will be fine for tuesday (fingers crossed). Only he, lee and mad dog come out of that game with any reward. Hope the other lads show the same commitment those three did yesterday on tuesday otherwise we will see ourselves out the cup.

Come on you yellows!!!

Firstly, credit is due to Bishops Stortford, raising their game or otherwise - from being 2- 0 down in 8 minutes to, at times, dominating the game - not many teams playing a side a division above would have the stomach to pull that back - particularly impressed by their number 4 - once he got going in midfield Bishops game started to raise and after their first goal their tails were up and they could sense that they could get something from the game.

Canvey's performance - well I've seen simlar a few times this season. However, we did have our chances and with a little bit of luck the scoreline could have been so much different.

Mcghee had a good game and certainly rolled his sleeves up - thought he was out of position for their first goal though. Not sure if it's the management who are telling the lads at the back to push forward? Both Mcghee and Sterling have pushed very deep at times when playing this season - sometimes losing the ball at key times and not being able to get back and cover.

Wardy got beat a few times this afternoon - just one of them days, the lad on that side was very quick - he did take a few nudges when chasing back with a one on one that none of the officials gave. Personally I would play either Wardy OR Mcghee and leave Sterling covering the other side.

Lee - not much you can say - he must get so frustrated at times this season with poor service or others around him not performing.

Danny - again good display today - felt he was getting a little bit P***d off at times with what was unfolding in front of him. Called to Ash to get warmed up and seemed to be struggling towards the end - hope he's OK and its nothing serious.

Overall I felt we again lost it in midfield - we seemed to allow them time and space to play through midfield with some searching balls down the line - particularly against Wardy. Sedgemore didn't stand out. JK got a smack to the nose, but seemed a little out of sorts as the game rolled on. Mario didn't do to bad - you can see sparks of a very good player - but on occassions did turn the ball over. Mints, didn't stand out either - good when he's on the ball but when he's not he becomes a bit of a passenger. Keeling, got stuck in but faded in the second half a little. Duffers - IMHO poor game throughout. Greggors and Berquez had no real effect on the game. One thing that worries me about Ollie is that he is to quick to get involved when there is no need. Couldn't understand why Burton wasn't given a run out.

Still believe we will get something out of Tuesdays replay - but we have got to get some consistency - with players and performance.

i am obviously not the only person watching this game that must agree that the following,

look forward to other replys.

players never seem to be in the same position for consecutive games.

it still remains that personalities/favourites take priority regardless of ability.

players in wrong positions.

Gregors is the most embarrassing player we have, cant run , cant tackle, cant shoot, cant pass, where do i stop, yet he came on in front of a loan player we have had for three weeks without playing who i hasten to add does at least look as though he can do ALL of the above items i mentioned Gregors cant do.

Too many players hanging on to the ball, delaying forward movement with preferences to the pass back rather than making flowing movements as per our past. (excluding Mario)

The management seem to be running scared of results, ie why do we play with one stiker against stortford ? also listening to the radio interview after game relating to our impending visit to RMI

A non e mouse sums it up completly.

minton not captain as not influential or even playing that well

Sorry disagree with Mc gee comments stortford were getting behind him far to easliy.

we should i believe play with a back four of:- ward Theobald & Mcgee in middle & Sterling

Also noticed mario playing the holding defensive roll were i believe he is better suited behind 2 strikers because he plays good supply balls & can shoot, sedgemore is my onther midfielder,my wide players would be keeling/duffers & minton but he needs to be told the game is about 90 minutes not what ever he wans to play.

Then two up front Boylan & Burton as have to agree with previous thread about gregories comments

How long have you been watching Canvey?

Gregory is no embarrassment. No one tries harder than him. Maybe he isnt good enough for the Conference but Canvey have been lucky to have had him over the last 5 years. He has made a huge impact for Canvey and scored some very important goals(wigan & Northampton spring to mind)and also formed a great partnership with Lee Boylan.
Whatever happens we owe him a huge debt of thanks for all that he has done for Canvey.

I've gone on record and said that I do not feel Greggors has another year in him at this level and others on this forum have disagreed - that's their right.

However, I would never use the word embarassment. He has been a loyal servant to the club and was one of those players whose skills were responsible for getting us into the Conference.

I may choose to say that I don't feel a player is performing or is c**p, but at the end of the day I would like just a tenth of their ability. They are playing for a team at a level I could only ever dream of. Think you used the word embarassment in the wrong context Anonymous.

I believe it was Merv who not so long ago questioned why were arguing about which three should play at the back and asked why not four at the back? I feel Canvey are better playing three at the back which allows us to play our attacking "sexy" football. However, I am starting to agree with the idea of four at the back - whilst we are unable to get it right in midfield we leave ourselves exposed at the back and give our back 3 and Danny a lot more work to do - something has to give and we usually end up conceeding a goal.

Sedgemore looks like a quality player but at times I'm not so sure about his inclusion in the squad - he tends to hold very centrally in midfield - he's never far enough forward to assist in the attack and if anything tends to drop back if the pressure is on - unlike Mints and Mario who seem to remain forward building up play in an attack. Likewise I feel Duffy, has become more defensive in his play over the past couple of seasons - he has the ability to run at players but seems happier to lay the ball off to someone else. His accuracy on passing has also been a little poor at times - particularly yesterday. He seems to be the complete opposite of Keeling who isn't afraid to run at defenders causing them to make mistakes. Would like to see Williamson and Mario team up.

I like Mcgee as a player - always have done. He is very good when someone is running at him - lacks a little bit of pace at times. My concern with him has always been that he clears his line by belting the ball rather than a constructive build up. At the moment I would settle for a good punt up field <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Wouldn't call Greggors an embarrasment. He has contributed so much to our success over the last couple of years but I think there has always been a split in differences over Greggors amongst Canvey fans over the years. Some really rate him and others think he is a bit of a donkey.

I would think far more of you and what you have to say if, instead of hiding behind annonymity, you put your name to your comments.

For my way of thinking, there are far too many anonymous posters on this site nowadays. The website team got banned from Park Lane for our opinions, but at least everybody knew who was expressing those opinions, we didn't feel the need to hide.
