how about this then.

A family member you live with smokes and 2 of her kids have asthma. We ask her to smoke outside and she tells us to [****!!****] off outside if we don't like it!

So i nicked her fags and threw them in the bin!

You should not smoke in someone else's private or personal space, e.g their home or their car. If they know you smoke, and don't mind, they will tell you it's ok, otherwise you should assume it is NOT ok. You should not ask, as this could put them (your host) in a difficult or potentially embarrassing position - a host does not wish to offend his/her guests, but to non-smokers, smokers are very smelly people.

This is not dictating to anyone, it is simple courtesy and consideration for others which should come before demanding your own right to smoke.

In the example posted above, it is not clear in whose house the incident took place. If it was the smoker's house, she has every right to smoke in it. She was however rude and inconsiderate to refrain from smoking in the presence of others (non-smokers). If it was not her house, she was bang out of order. I would have asked her to leave.

Public places is a more tricky one, but I would favour a ban, most certainly in restaurants and cafes.

I suspect that part of the problem is that smokers genuinely do not realise how unpleasant their habit is to others, as they cannot smell it themselves. It stinks, at considerable distances, is acrid and causes the windpipe and eyes to smart, especially contact lens wearers or those with eye or respirartory disorders.

It is really none of my business whether other people smoke or not. Frankly I wish smokers would smoke more, thus dying quicker and clearing off, but it should not be done in confined spaces outside your own home.

So there.

I'm with Crispy Lettuce-Pray !

Both me and 'Er Indoors are smokers, but we respect non-smokers rights, HOWEVER, anybody entering our house must abide by the fact that we smoke.

If people really want to get healthy and ban smoking, then they must also ban every vehicle on the road that uses petrol and diesel !

Sulphur dioxide is just as lethal as carbon monoxide !

(I'll get me coat, shall I ??)

well why don't we just ban everything that's ever hurt anyone: cars, planes, trains, bikes, football, rugby, hockey, guns, plays, music, etc. Will that make you happy?

Yes.

Well, plays and music can stay. The rest can fk off.

nope, music has to go as a few years back a couple of fans were killed at a Pearl Jam gig, plus all the countless deatsh at rap concerts in the states. It's harmful and must go. Also Abe Lincoln was shot while watching a play meaning that plays are dangerous and they've got to go too. Now we have nowt to live for do we?
