It's not really about the health risk to smokers, as I see it. They have been told of the risks, so it's up to them. The issue is about smoking in the proximity (i.e. in an enclosed space) of other people, which is rude, inconsiderate, unpleasant and offensive, not to mention endangering the health of others.

Cars and power stations etc are a complete red herring, nothing to do with the question at the top of the thread.

Cigarettes kill, end of story, its your choice whether to smoke or not. My grandad gave up smoking at the age of 30, he is now 82 and still has bad chest pains and has asthma, he hasnt even smoked for 52 years and it still happens. If people think its 'cool' then they are incorrect i find it completely 'uncool' but thats my very biased view.

pubs restaurants etc should be allowed to make there own choice.. if the owner wants to run a smoking pub let him.. if you dont like it dont drink/work there go to wetherspoons or somewhere like that..

if you want to ban smoking in public then as was mentioned how can u stop there.. cars get it next..

personally i enjoy the odd fag.. the only 'indoors' place i would smoke is a pub.. i often go weeks without even thinking about ciggies.. i also drive a car that is currently averageing about 17 mpg round town. but i hate people who drop litter or dont pick up their dogs [****!!****].. im in the 'if u cant see it it dont count' brigade.. fk the polar ice caps my grandchilren can worry about them..

live in the now man!!

No, because cars are a private place.

Offices, bars, restaurants, cinemas and so on are public places i.e. places where the public are invited to enter. Further, people work there.

At the very least bars etc should have to provide a true non-smoking zone, with a smelly smokers zone if they wish - not the other way round.

Places are obliged to provide facilties for people with disabilities, they are not simply told to go somewhere else if they don't like it why should non-smokers?

**Ante Script** (opposite to a post script)

I apologise for the length of this diatribe about smoking... I wont be offended if you just exit the thread and look at something more interesting !!!

My great grandad finally perished in 1978, aged 91. He had been a Woodbine (unfiltered cigarette) smoker since the age of ten, when he started working down the pit as a mule-boy.

He died of complications to do with a fall that he had sustained some weeks earlier, breaking his pelvis and several other bones.

The circumstances of his death were such that a post mortem was performed upon his mortal remains and the upshot of this was that his lungs were as healthy as a new-born babies !!!

It was suggested that some form of resistance to the coal-dust he had breathed as a young man had protected him from lung damage that his 40-a-day habit should otherwise have wreaked !

I do not know if this is true or not or whether he was just extremely lucky in having some sort of genetic resistance - after all, he never suffered cancer or anything like that - he was a remarkably fit & healthy octogenarian.

Anyhow, notwithstanding my great grandad's powers of healthfulness, I want to use this thread to state that I only started smoking at the age of 21 in a misguided effort to impress 5 lasses who were my "sales team" at the time - on a road trip where we had to doss down together over several nights and after rather a lot of bevvies and a 5:1 ratio "do or dare" followed a particularly good days trading.

The ultimate end to this episode was that the stakes were continuously raised, the lasses ganging up on the field sales manager (me) and (shall we say, somewhat euphemistically) favours on the part of all five were offered, should I smoke a whole packet of 20 before their very eyes !

I smoked 20 !!!

Notwithstanding the immediate payback was satisfactory in the extreme (!), I have continued smoking since (20 years) and have found refraining from smoking for any period longer than about 12 hours absolutely impossible - including using patches and suchlike - I develop severe migraines, bleeding gums, (more) noxious bodily odours and a crabby attitude that would make godzilla tremble. My wife has threatened to kill me within 24 hours on all three occasions that I have tried to give up - I believed her each time and I am sure that if I was her, I would have been in total agreement... talk about "Jekyll & Hyde".

Anyhow, I just want to end this very chatty entry to the thread with the thought that if I were able to relive my life again with just one single change to it... from the choices of (a) not developing Type 2 Diabetes; (B) not breaking my neck & slipping a disc in a road traffic accident; © not commencing smoking (even considering the seemingly "special" circumstances in which my habit began) or (d) spending most of my life since the age of 5 carrying far too much weight.

© would win every time !

I hate the hold and control that the blasted things have over my existence.

If it were possible to arrange to be sedated into an unconscious state for (say) eight weeks whilst the body were in the process of readjusting to nicotine deprivation - I'd jump at the chance... otherwise I have occasional fond dreams of getting shipwrecked alone on a nicotine-free island and just having to give up, 'coz there is no alternative - and then being rescued some short time afterward - never to smoke again !

Oh well ! That's what I think about smoking anyhow... I think that it is quite a good thing that all these public restrictions are coming into force, however I am concerned that some concentration of such restrictions might not be totally in the public interest... I know just what I am like if I run out of nicotine for any extended period - talk about behavioural changes !!!

Roll on the "sedation clinic" method...

i dont mean smoking in cars i mean ban cars cos of the smoke they produce..as for your last line, well smokers could argue that as well..
i dont really care that much as it dosent affect me personally , but i do think owners of bars etc should have the choice.. public buildings like libraries fair enough.. restaurants, again up ot the owner if they want non smoking or non smoking sections.. i dont see why they should be compelled to ban it.. some will, some wont choice for everyone ..

I wasn't referring to smokers. If they want to puff their live away to an early grave and leave their loved ones behind then there's not really much that can be done.

But if there was a cigarette that will give smokers what they 'need' yet still be healthy than at least non-smokers would be safe.

I might go round public bars violently harming people. When told to stop I'll just reply 'if you don't like don't come here'. It's essentially the same thing.

A few weeks ago a policeman friend of mine happened to be at the pathology lab, attending upon a recent suicide victim.

The pathologist showed him the victim's lungs and declared that he was a non-smoker, but thet "he also lived much of his time away from London".

When my pal asked him how he knew that he wasn't "local", the pathologist brought out a pair of lungs which he had casually stored in jars [silly man] and showed him how dirty they were.

Apparently, living within the M25 area is equivalent to smoking 20 fags a day, such is the amount of pollution around.

Think we should do more to curb the impact of traffic pollution, as this and other pollutants are a major cause of lung cancer. They don't tell you that on the side of a box of B&H.
