Students and pupils

Recommended Posts

Something that rather escaped me at the time has come to my attention. Not content with doling out a couple of hundred quid to every newborn child, "they" are now paying schoolchildren (pupils - I refuse to call them students) 30 quid a week to stay on to do AS and A levels.

Why?

What is the reasoning behind those payments, then charging tuition fees and abolishing the grants for higher education students?

Funny you should bring this subject up, Invis.

I've just read a poster on our local bus, advertising, that IF you stay on in school AFTER TAKING YOUR GCSE's, you could qualify for UP TO £30 a week.

I think you'll find its a way of 'massaging' the un-employment figures !

the govmnt can employ 3,000 people to administer the payments,... then employ another 4,000 to collect the charges.. its called 'full employment'(muffled laughter) and even scrounging students, along with the hard working middle classes and old people with big houses have to cough up for it now

Yeh same here, less than 5% of pupils stayin on in my school are reciveing it.

Also you get rewarded something like a 100 quid for doing well at the end of each term!

Not bad for those people that get it. However we had our local MP come in to are school recently, and i bought up this subject. We woundered why ? Their answer was it is to convince children to stay on instead of rushing out to get a job. The 100 quid is to make sure the students actually come to skool instead of takin the money n bunkin all the time.

To be honest i fink 30k a year is to low. In all honesty unless your really rich, not often does your mum n dad buy you clothes, pay for you to go everywhere!

30 quid a week if your household income is less than 30k a year.

£30k is often a figure bandied about as an 'above average' household income (which it is in statistical terms), but it goes nowhere if you've got a mortgage over £100k, have to pay for travel, council tax, childcare, graduate debts, other debts, tuition fees in later life for your kids, etc etc etc, and your employer expects a 3% pay rise - which barely covers utility bill price rises per year - to see you through.

Rant over, I'm just fed up of working for 'the man'... <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/angry.gif" alt="" />

I think it's an absolute disgrace. Children should do what they want to do re post secondary school education, not because they're being bribed to. It is totally unncecessary - if students are short of funds they get a part time job, thousands do.

I shall therefore consign this to the overflowing 'stupid waste of money' bin.

How much are newborn babies getting...?

I might have to look into this if it's a lot... <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/sperma.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

I think all children born after September 2002 are entitled to a Trust Fund voucher for at least £250.00 (it can go up to £500 depending on the family income) it then has to be invested into a designated account and can't be touched by anyone until the child is 18 when they can access the funds. The idea is that the fund grows and that hopefully more money is paid in in the intervening 18 years.
