I must confess to wearing a hoody and baseball cap as well, albeit not with tracksuit bottoms etc. and certainly not with the hood up. I'm 47 years old so does that make me a chav??? In all fairness though, bikers have been wearing the aforementioned tops and caps since the mid eighties so in fashion terms it's old hat (boom, boom!!)

Surely it's not as easy as that. What you have described is somebody who is a criminal, but not all chavs are criminals and not all criminals are chavs.

From what I can see the word chav is a name hijacked by the middle classes and spread by the tabloid pres to describe working class teenagers who have a liking for outlandish brand labels, gangster rap music, lots of gold jewellery and so on – just scruffy children really.

But not JUST that, I'd say. You're right, not all chavs are criminals, but the popularity of the term 'chav' and the media hoo-hah about it is fuelled by the increasing amount of anti-social behaviour.. so, right or wrong, chavs are becoming synonmous with crime/young offenders, etc...

Now back to chavs. I think the word chav is actually quite newish, I've only started using it about 2 years back. Before it was pikeys or gypos. Up north there townies and kevs ya know. <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" />
