I wonder if he would have received the same adulation had he been white? I grew up in the Clay/Ali era and yes a great boxer of his time, when a world title meant something.

He was a very clever boxer who used his brain in the ring to outwit his opponents, most of whom could hardly add 2 + 2, but could sling a haymaker or two.

Don't get me wrong I like boxing, well did do when titles meant something, but smashing the granny out of someone in a ring for 12 rounds or so, doesn't (in my eyes) define a sporting legend.

I have never really taken time out to think of who might warrant such a title, but Lance Armstrong must come pretty close.

Considering what goes in to winning the Tour de France, it must be the height of an endurance test, but with each 'sport' having differing attributes, it is hard to define who is actually The Greatest...
