POLICE ISSUE MORE FINES FOR MOBILE PHONE DRIVERS

Figures released from Havering Police show an increase in the number of fixed penalty notices issued for motorists using a hand held mobile phone whilst driving.

In 2004 Havering Police issued 201 fines, while 192 have so far been issued up 30th September.

Statistics drawn from the Department of Transport show that during the first 10 months of the ban (1 Dec 2003 to 30 Sept 2004), 26,400 fixed penalty notices were issued by 27 of the 51 police forces in Britain.

The current penalty for those caught is a £30 fixed penalty, however the Road Safety Bill (2005) will permit the fine to increase to £60 and, perhaps more importantly, allow three penalty points to be appended to the licence of the offender.

I hate it when drivers use their mobile phones while driving. It's totally irresponsible!
