24 hour drinking

Recommended Posts

With extended hours there will be a initial problem with increased drunkenness as culturally we are not used to drinking at a slower pace. However i think it is worth continuing with in the hope that people get used to pacing themselves and drink in a relaxed manor. It would be nice to think that when you have been to see a show in London that you can have a relaxed drink afterwards without worrying about last orders. However we must try too extend the hours that transport runs as well to accomodate the drinking hours otherwise we will be having the problem of everyone exiting the pubs to catch the last train so defeating the objective of extended hours.

We have had 24-hour liquor licences in most places in Australia for a while now. However, the effect of them tends to be minimal simply because they are so hard to get - local councils aren't going to issue them just anywhere. In fact, I think there are only a couple of places here in Sydney that actually have one. I think the system generally works well because of this stringent process. Personally, I love knowing there will always be somewhere to have a drink after 3am in the city!

the decision you take is do I stop or carry on, what ever happens you pay the price, back in 1983 I took the wrong decision and got a ban for drink driving, only had 3 drinks but 3 to many, £150 fine, a year ban and losing my company car

You could always get a taxi home instead of driving or be responsible and not drink too much if you are driving home.

will the police be asking early morning drivers to blow in the bag, I think they will

What is wrong with that, i would rather people who drink and drive are caught by the police and kept off the roads.

Yep, agree with all the above. It's ludicrous that everyone has to leave the pub and toddle off like good little boys and girls at 11pm, because the government in 1915 (?) said we should.

Come on Invis. You know the reason we toddle off at 11 pm is because I'm ready for bed.

Whoops! I mean...I can only manage to drink a couple of pints before I get really, really tired.

 • 3 weeks later...

It's not as if nobody ever bought a drink anywhere after 11pm before, and calm, peace and goodwill descended upon the streets after 11.20. Especially on Fridays and Saturdays there were plenty of places th eyounf scamps could go on to, pubs with late licences, clubs and so on. Now it just levelled up, a pub can apply to open later if it wants and if the guvnor reckons its worth it. Quite honestly I think it was outrageously patronising to be told we mustn't stay in the pub after 11pm. I also don't really care what the police think about it, we are not here for their convenience, quite the reverse. They don'y actually do a great deal anyway do they?

Like all these things, there is a great hoohah before the event, predictions of gloom, disaster, catastroiphe, the end of the Empire if not the world, and nothing much actually changes in the event.
