george best

It’s oh so easy for an old codger like me to look back at those nostalgic days when everything was much better than it is now; summers were warmer, snow was deeper, beer tasted better and footballers were more skilful than they are nowadays. Most of it total baloney, of course. Except the bit about football in general and George Best in particular. What a sad, sad, loss.

In my youth we had hardly any football on the TV except for the FA Cup Final and special games. Prima donnas weren’t rammed down out throats most nights of the week and so when I did get to see George in action it was something to behold. He was young, good looking and above all, talented. He did things with a ball that hadn’t been seen since the days of Stanley Matthews.

Best’s balance was something I could never understand, nor could most of the defences he mesmerised. He was able to walk through any line-up be it four at the back, three, or even five. He made the game of football exciting long before the days of agents, sponsors, and the media moguls who came along to created the multi-national, multi-million, multi-facetted three ring circus that it often is nowadays. He was a genius at football; not at bagging sponsorship deals, not as a film actor nor as a poet. And we were able to share in what he created.

Sadly the papers will run their 12 page spreads (they’ve started already, I understand) but probably 10 of those pages will concentrate on the booze and the birds that came later. I, for one, insist on remembering Best for his footballing talent. I couldn’t care less what he drank nor who he drank it with. God bless you George and thanks for the footballing memories.

oh someone who pissed their life up the wall, dont get me wrong, he was an amazing player, but there is more to learn from his life on the booze than there is any other element, alcohol is a terrible terrible drug, by far the worst about at the moment

Yeah such a sad loss of a great footballer. We all knew from this week that he probably didnt have long left in this world of ours but for me it was still a horrible feeling when he actually died today. Pics of him when he was young and weaving his magic around confused defences were there to marvel at on the news this lunch-time. Saw the great man yrs ago when I was in the Spurs crowd and he was taking a corner for Man U. It was so exciting to be that close to him even in those days. Rest well mate, & hope you will be remembered mainly for your footie skills and not other things.

The Problem is your asking for people to forget the thing that ultimately killed him.......the booze.

Football didnt save him and booze killed him so I know what is more important in the grand sceme of things.

We give him a heros send off because we like football, but what about those who dont like football what is he to them?????

Great Footballer but in matters of life and death football is minor.

RIP George what a troubled life you lead.

RIP a player who truly lived up to his name 'Best'. One of the greatest if not the greatest the only thing he never got was a shot at an international tournamentb which he would have lit up.

As Stimmos Army said though there is one thing to learn from his troubled life, Alcohol is a drug and can kill.

However, let us remember George for the good things rather than the bad

I cannot begin to imagine the likely Hall of Fame showbizz and sports personalities who will be seen at his funeral.

I just hope it don't turn into a "place to be seen circus" and his family and real friends are given some respect by the media frenzy that is bound to occur.

I would guess though George would want the Mother of all Wakes probably at somewhere like Stringfellows with champagne fountains and pole-dancers...........top bloke !!

Charlie George??? Come on Paula, he looked like (and still looks like) the back of a bus...

No accounting for taste that's for sure, lol...

Bestie was one of a kind and I'm sure we will never see his like again. Bless his heart and may he rest in peace always.

They did a minute silence at Fulham v Bolton, but by the end it everyone was clapping. I think a minute applause is a much nicer gesture than a minutes silence, really shows appreciation for what the man has done for football.

Had the pleasure of seeing him play live 3 times in his career - a testimonial match at West Ham for Ronnie Boyce in 1973 and twice thereafter for Fulham in 1976.

The man was phenomenal and truly one of the greatest of all time. These days so many players are described as "Great" but believe what you read and hear about George Best, he really was as good as people say and most definately an all time great. If he could have played in a World Cup and showed his skills off at that level, people would certainly now be speaking of him in the same terms as Pele and Maradona.

Rest in peace George and thanks for the memories.
