Burton Albion Win Sets Up Man Utd Game in FA Cup 3rd Round

Burton Albion's 4-1 victory v Burscough tonight has set up their meeting with Manchester United in the FA Cup 3rd Round.

I really hope that they play the game at Burton however instead of taking it to Old Trafford. Man Utd will want it at OT and it would be a bigger moneyspinner for Burton to take it there but for their fans sake and to have any chance whatsoever of an upset, they have to play at Burton.

Being honest? I don't see how they could play a game against Manchester United at Park Lane with it's facilities (Burton have a new stadium this season and it is far superior to ours) but if Canvey were ever fortunate enough to get through and draw Arsenal, Man Utd, Liverpool, Spurs, West Ham etc. I suppose I'd have to say play it at their ground and forsake home advantage for the following reasons -

A. The revenue from a game like that could keep our club going for a season or so from the gate receipts we'd receive.

B. It would be great to watch Canvey at a ground like OT, Highbury, Upton Park etc. and it would be a great day out for the fans and an honour to play at somewhere like that.

Therefore consider all the points I made in my initial post totally and utterly contradicted!!! <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

Thanks for that Leo.

Yeah, I would go for playing at one of those clubs you mentioned just for the day out. Would get quite a few out of the woodwork to come as well, although it would happen to every non club in that position.

Saying that, wonder what the feelings would be if we had a new ground. With these ties, they say you only get one chance of an upset. Even if you could play at home, actually beat a big gun, what's the chances of getting knocked out soon after anyway.

Don't know why we are discussing this, but hey you have to plan ahead!

After the debacle with Farnborough a few seasons ago we wouldn't be able to switch the tie. If we couldn't play it at Park Lane we would have to play it at the nearest available league ground. Yeading were in a similar position last year.

Added to which any money made over and above what you would have made playing the match at home goes to the FA.

I thought at the start of the season the FA made the rule that at no point are teams allowed to switch thier games to a different venue. I Could be wrong.

From a financial point of view if we was to draw a big team out the hat i would like to see it switched but at the same time it would be excellent to see the likes of Henry or Rooney gracing the park lane pitch.

I remember seeing Marlow play at Spurs a few years ago after they drew them in the FA Cup and gave up home advantage to play it at White Hart Lane.

Spurs played in their away kit and Marlow produced the programmes as I recall & Marlow put up a great performance though losing 4-1 I think (though it may have been 5-1)- when they scored it was like they had won the FA Cup and they were cheered to the rafters at the end and did a lap of honour. I bet the Marlow players will remember that till the day they die.

People often forget the original Southend match was switched to Roots Hall. He were supposed to be at home.

The decision for the Southend game was made after consultation with the police. They said we couldn't stage it in time because both clubs had gone to a replay that year and it only left 9 days to organise. So they changed it to Southend who could easily stage the fixture.

As for if we ever got a Premier League team, the FA say that the fixture must be fulfilled unless it is unsuitable. Now Canvey would obviously have trouble fulfilling the fixture with our ground but before you switch a tie, alternative grounds must be looked at. So Southend, Dagenham and even West Ham and Colchester would more than likely be looked at. Of course, West Ham would probably only be considered if we were playing someone like Chelsea or Manchester United.

They couldn`t play it at Old Trafford, if their ground was ruled out they would have to use the nearest suitable stadium, Pride Park i would guess.

I believe Burton`s chairman had said he would do all he could to get the game played at home so he got his wish, you never know they may take them to a replay in Manchester.
