Enfield welcomed back Danny Clarke and Nick Turner into the squad after both were missing in the previous two games.Kevin Kilroy was rather surprisingly on the bench.
An early chance for Danny Clarke when a loose ball fell to his feet but just couldn't connect with the ball. From here on the game got somewhat scrappy with both sides unable to break the other down . 25mins in and Ilford's Leon Braithwaite got clear but was foiled by a good save from steve wright. Enfield had a great chance soon after with good work from sherwin stanley and Lee Allinson put Danny Clarke in ,but his shot went a whisker wide. As the half drew to a close a long ranger from stanley rattled Ilfords crossbar with keeper Lee ward well beaten .The second half was pretty much the same as the first with both defences holding firm. Ex E Jeff Hammond was having a fairly quiet game but Braithwaite looking the more dangerous and Braithwaite bought another fine save from wright . On 66 mins a great ball fed Danny clarke and a blistering shot was brilliantly kept out by ward. Enfield had a couple of scares giving away a couple of free kicks on the edge of the box with enfields wall blocking one the other flew miles wide ,Jeff Hammond then fired a shot even wider . More good work from sherwin stanley and a good lay off put in nathan smith but he somehow managed to scuff his shot wide when he looked odds on to bury it. But a dramatic end to the match came in the dying seconds when enfields players packed the box for a late free kick that bobbled around the box only for an Ilford defender (Ray Taylor I think) to stick out an arm. Mr Child without hesitation pointed to the spot. With kevin Kilroy on the bench responsibility fell to Danny Gabriel . The penalty was powerfully struck and partially saved but the ball spun over the line to win the match from the very last kick. Danny was booked for over celebrating and jumping into the delerious Es faithful. Thanks to Tracey for organising a whip round to pay the small fine. I suppose we did incite it. Every player played his heart out today with youngsters sammy Judge and wes Borghys having excellant games . If only we had this level of commitment every week.
