we have had enough of this [****!!****] press! <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/angry.gif" alt="" />why they don't show the british soldiers in action when they get blown up by an invisible and coward enemy! <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/angry.gif" alt="" /> get out of the place and nuke them! <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/angry.gif" alt="" />

Tell that to the Iraq soldiers who are getting beaten. They too are fighting invisible enemies who use rockets and bombs.

What you have to remember is that they are just soldiers following orders, just like our own soldiers, in a war which has been started on false pretences, (no weapons of mass destruction found yet!).

What a well-argued and thought-out solution... <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" />

Have a closer look at the under message statement "world cup final:england-italy 1-2"

Obviously an Italian tank driver with five reverse gears and one forward.

Iam one of those nice English lads with a sense of humour, C of E north London born and obviously then a Spurs supporter (since 1948)must go its 11:45 am and I must read the book of Italian hero!s before midday
Truth to tell their is a great book of Italian mini-sub heroics in WW2 that is a must read which puts to bed the fun jokes about Italian hero!s

The lads in that regiment were under enormous pressure at the time the pictures were made (around 2 years ago), having bricks and grenades getting thrown at them. Maybe they also suffered losses.

I think its easy for people to judge these pictures, without thinking about the circumstances that our boys were under.

Its a shame that the British armey face a lot of criticism from there own press and people. Whether or not you agree with the war my sympathies are with the soldiers and not the Iraqi's. Strange as that may sound.

It's not a war, though, it's a peacekeeping operation - at least in the official view of things. The rules are entirely different as is the conduct expected of soldiers. It's probably not a position they should be in, or a job they should have to do given that they're trained to fight an enemy rather than exercise restraint in the face of provocation, but unfortunately their government has put them in a position where if they break the rules, then they have to be punished for it in the eyes of the international community.

That's how it works, whether you like it or not. Don't blame the newspapers, blame the government for going in in the first place.

The problem for them is that peace keeping goes out the window when they face daily problems, be it bombings against them or amongst the local population. Don't get me wrong, I entirely blame the government for the fate of the Squaddies out there, but the opposition they face is intensfified when our own media and its writers start calling for the soldiers to be prosecuted, and pictures are broadcast across the British Media and Al Jazeera. Seems like a propaganda coup to attack more British soldiers, in order to sell more papers.

As far as i'm concerned the squaddies are to blame. When the UK police beat up protesters or people rioting, those guilty police officers are brought to justice, so the same should be true for squaddies!!!

I wonder how you might have felt had you been out there yourself as a conscript

I well remember talking to (then) lads of my generation and older who fought in Cyprus, Kenya and northern Ireland and well remember how vivid they made the adrenalin rush when on active service and possibly about to be maimed or killed any second, civil liberties or not the first issue that comes to mind when you have that second by second threat in your conscious thoughts

What a surprise to read this morning that they had been under heavy attack, ie mortar fire, machine fire (this was a daily occurence but particuarly bad day as well - the commanding officer of the regiment involved had received a medal for his conduct during these times), that they were under orders to organise snatch squads (not the snatch some people would think of) to round up the ringleaders, take them to base and give them a going over with batons (as per army protocol during "peacekeeping"), instead the media so keen to make a sensational story, endanger the reputation and safety of the army, and show a small part of the story without the full backround. Just like the Mirror printing hoax pictures some time ago.

Also this event happened 2 years ago, o had the "victims" really been so innocent why hadn't they sold there story till now (until some hack receives some footage recently). There was no blood and the "victims" were released. End of story.

Morrisonm I think I agree to disagree, you can't draw comparisons with the British Bobby. Imo that is ridiculous.

This I think is the key point. These guys are trained soldiers, what what little I know about it probably amongst, if not the, best in the world. They are NOT policemen. They are being asked to do a enormously difficult, ill-defined and contradictory job for which they are not trained, and are probably temporamentally ill suited and probably never joined up to do in the first place.

Yes, strictly speaking they should not have done what it appears they have done, but context is everything (and let's haave all the facts and evidence before we decide anything). On the face of it if guilty I would suggest it is deemed a technicality and they recieve a nominal, or confined to barracks for a week or something, whatever it is the pongoes do.

Just ask yourself this. You are being shot at, mortared and stoned, and all you have is a baton, wouldn't you beat the [****!!****] out of somebody if you caught them? I would! Bear in mind these images appeared in the News of the Screws(so they said on BBC America), and didn't mention the happenings before hand!
