Smoking will be banned in public places in summer 2007!

what a weak willed person...

No different than someone who won't give up the morning coffee, beer, colas, junk food, or whatever his or her body pollutant of choice is. Every human has at least one addiction or bad habit. People don't seem to mind this fact unless it comes to smoking. Smokers seem to be fair game for people who want to gripe about addictions of others and say we are weak willed.

Could that be because it is the one that EVERYBODY has suffered from even if they never smoke themselves?

The way I see it, no one forced me to start, so if I die from smoking related illnesses, it is my own fault. Studies have shown that secondhand smoke is not as dangerous as some will lead us to believe.. we've been through all this before.

In the industrialized area I live in, I would probably die of lung cancer anyway without ever having smoked.

Studies will prove whatever you want them to prove. Some will say passive smoking's no harm, some will say your chance of getting cancer is x% more likely as a result.

Quite apart from the health aspect, having someone pollute the air with smoke when you're trying to eat is reason enough for a ban. Personally, I'm not that bothered about banning it in pubs (unless they serve food), as you expect it in those environments, but I'm all for it in other public places. It's no great hardship for the smoker to wait until they're elsewhere to light up.

The only studies which have shown that second hand smoke is not as dangerous as first thought has been funded by cigarette companies. I have worked in a clinical environment with access to all the latest studies and it is a fact that secondary smoke is as bad as first thought. Smoking is worse than most addictions because it has a direct effect on others. It is selfish of smokers not consider other peoples health when lighting up.

The same could be said about the person who drinks far too much, makes a scene in the pub annoying everyone then getting behind the wheel of a car. He or she certainly isn't thinking of the well being of others by risking killing or maiming someone.

Most pubs (at least here) have 'smoke eaters' installed in several locations of the ceiling. They draw the smoke straight up and into a vent before it has a chance to spread through the room.

The studies I have seen that show secondhand smoke is not as much of a danger as it is said to be were not done by cigarette companies.

The difference is that smoking has a direct effect on other people, where as drinking doesn't it. Not all drinkers cause problems.

I can medically guarantee you that second hand smoke is as dangerous as first thought.

It sounds to me that you are just unwilling to give non smokers a better chance of living a healthy life and are only thinking of your own smoking desires!

If I am in a designated smoking section, of course I will light up at any time. A non smoker who chooses to sit in the smoking section is aware that others will be smoking. If I am in a place where smoking is allowed but there isn't a division between smoking and nonsmoking sections, I won't smoke around someone I know it bothers. If I am not sure, I ask others if it will bother them. Not all smokers are the heartless cads you seem to want to think they are.

You're about to slaughter a chicken in your picture, Moo, so I think that nullifies your earlier argument

No such violence ever actually happened on the Muppet Show. Nevermind the fact I am neither Swedish nor a chef.

Watched the Chelsea - Colchester cup game in our local social club yesterday evening.

48 people present.

If the SMOKERS were excluded, there would have been THREE PEOPLE PRESENT.

It seems our club will 'test' the new legislation in Summer 2007.

£2,500 for each `tests` suggests that not many `tests` will take place

I take it no-one saw the Chelsea game for the amount of smoke in the room?
