Report just posted on Echo Website talking about possible move

AN MP today called on soccer fans to back Canvey Island Football Club amid fears of a move from the island.

Castle Point MP Bob Spink, who is president of the club, said falling numbers at games were behind the rumours of a ground share with Chelmsford City at Melbourne Park. He urged the whole of the borough to back the club and their manager, Jeff King.

Dr Spink said: "It is a fantastic club with a great atmosphere and they play great football.

"It would be hard to see them move out, but I understand the point they are making.

"I hope Canvey people can turn up to show more support for our local team. I hope any rumours of a move prove to be untrue, but they certainly need to improve support from local people."

Mr King denied the club was about to move, but admitted it was not attracting enough supporters to make it viable.

Yes it`s on the front page of tonights Echo. I don`t really know what to make of it, the club needs and deserves bigger crowds as has been discussed on here many times, they seem to have the backing of the local council but not the people of Canvey.

The mention of groundsharing with Chelmsford is a rumour i`ve never heard before and i think i`ve heard most of the rumours doing the rounds.

The club has to stay on the Island or that is it. If we groundshare with Chelmsford then we might as well become Chelmsford City then!!

This seems to be quite a strong story, so there must be some truth in it..

If it goes ahead i presume Canvey Island FC would be no more?

Would it be a merger of the two clubs or is it just a ground share option?

This is all very concerning!

Sounds like a ground share option, maybe if we needed a league standard ground. I'm pretty sure Melbourne Park could be converted into a League standard ground.

Pretty sure it's just rumours. Seem to be a few of them about!!

In my opinion the groundshare part of the story is a total non-starter, if the club isn`t based on Canvey then i would find it very difficult to support them. What concerns me is the fact we can`t seem to attract people to Park Lane even when we are playing at our highest level.

i can't see what benefit Chelmsford would get from us ground sharing with them, its not as if they would make lots of cash from large crowds etc..

If the 2 clubs did come together would this mean that the new club could stay within the Conference?

what a load of rubbish. there are so many holes in this story it has to be the Echo making a mistake.

a. if we were going to ground share why on earth would it be with Chelmsford.

b. a ground share with a team that far away would only loose a fan base and the club money

c. oh i cant even be bothered to continue. it is a blatent attemt to scare the part time supporters into attending. hope it works

Seems rather stupid. Wouldn't be surprised if the NLP started it!!!

reduce tickets give them away to all ages. the thing is people only want to know us when we are doing well the fa trophy final being a good example. But we cant do well until we get bigger gates to get more money in the club then we can buy better players and go full time. Everything to do with the club going full time relays on the gates.

i feel it is a publicity tactic and its worked were front page news and we havent been that for a while most people who buy the echo dont even reach the back pages only those who care about sport read the newspaper properly (from the back forwards). And this season back pages have been taken up by our neighbours (you know that place with the pier) you have to dredge 2 or 3 pages in to find our bit only upstaging them with the grays double and tuesday night games actually now i think of it its absoloutly disgusting the coverage we get especially since there are now 2 echo papers (castle point and southend) and even our one concentrates on the place with the pier todays paper being an example anyway i believe it may swell numbers temporarily and is a scare tactic also a bit of journalists poetic license surely.

Next Week who knows Bowers Gifford???
