What is it about Canvey

Recommended Posts

I just cant believe the people of Canvey and Benfleet.

I was born on the island and still like to call it home even though I now live in Benfleet. I am proud of my roots and so should you be. If you don't like the area then why are you here!!

Everything is going downhill not just the footie club.

Waterside Farm - used to be packed, now empty.

There used to be enough people to fill 4 clubs, Kings, Goldmine, Monico and the place which is now Astairs.

Well the Goldmine now has flats in its place and Kings just sits empty.

Even some of the pubs are practically empty. The golf course also had financial problems.

Castle Point Council the people of Canvey and Benfleet need to get something sorted otherwise you'll loose everything. Use the facilities of Canvey - thats what you pay your Council Tax for!!!

It wont just be the football club!

Most people on this island are of the lowest common denominator. You see it in the pubs, on the buses and in the shops. They are stupid, show no pride in their community and moan about how bad things are and sorry to say this most of it comes from the young people.

Those youngsters who read this board and go to games ignore that comment but there's definitely a real apathy around the island.

Suppose lots of people have differing views and experiences.

Personally I feel a lot of people don't work, shop or even socialise on the island any more.

If you want night life then people seem to go to Basildon or Southend.

If you want to work then business seems to be up the city or elsewhere - commuting basically. They therefore seem to socialise off the island as well.

The island seems to be a place for people to reside but offers little else.

I also think that because we are an island with fewer amenities there is little for people who live in Hadleigh Basildon, Pitsea or Benfleet to want to come on the island for. The last person I spoke to in Benfleet only ever came to the island for the cinema - "although that's expensive!"

I certainly feel the "make up" of the island has changed over the past 10 years and with the influx of people it is not as clique as it used to be.

I think all sports and amenities are suffering at the moment with everyone trying to attract the punters and potential revenue streams. I went to Rye House speedway a few Saturdays ago and their was rumours it may struggle because the Greyhound racing had been withdrawn. Arena Essex also struggled for attendances last year with rumours of the franchise closing so I'm not sure if it's a general thing for this little part of the world. <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

Sadly Yellow, that goes for wherever you live these days - Canvey is no better or no worse than most places these days I am afraid.

Without getting too deep and political, we have been let down dramatically by successive goverments since the war in so many ways, discipline and self respect has fallen by the wayside and a sense of community is now long in the past for most people.

People have more now than they have ever had but the quality of life has declined has declined (in my opinion) over the last 20 odd years. Education, health, anti social behavior, crime - governments pay these lip service but never come up with any solutions at all - so, so sad.
