Best XI

O!k Phil

Coincidentally I genuinly believe under the conditions that we succesfully used the flanks with acceptable change of pace going forward and most importantly recovering back to assist the back three all night

Movement off and on the ball with back three mid-field and forwards kept the opposition at stretch for 90 minutes

Anybody not at the game should understand the conditions were awful

IE bloody cold & windy plus a bumpy pitch not made for controlled football and an opposition with nothing to lose plus the atmosphere was not exactly motivating

One of those nights when "well done lads" was the call

I feel that Jeff Minton is sometimes playing too far deep. He would more suit I diamond midfield formation sitting just behind Gregory & Boylan, he's not afraid to run a defences.

Also speaking of running at defences, why is it that when someone like Minton or Parmenter runs at an opposition's defence. They hold firm and try to stop them entering the box, when our defence lets the attackers run and run and enter the box and let a shot go and usually score!! Why don't they hold firm like our opponents?

When people say that a player holds onto the ball for too long, this is usually because they are trying to find an opening. Opposing attackers are just given too much freedom!! I think Kingstonian's equaliser last week proves my point.

Technically the defenders role is first to create delay (allowing cover to gain position) , secondly to steer the opponent away from a shooting position and thirdly to make a safe tackle when the correct opportunity occurs

If an early opportunity to tackle is on then fine BUT:

What drives fans mad is when the shut down fails to include steering the opponent away from the danger areas and when other defenders or mid-fielders fail to use the time gained and take-up covering positions

Only my belief but where we consistently suffer is in not having a natural covering back 3 or back 4 player

OR

wide mid-fielders who get box to box in making solid defensive cover and assistance to the back three (JK excluded in the present selections)
