I had a call from British Gas about my Gas Home Care Agreement, when I was asked is there anything else I can do for you Sir, I replied NO, when the agreement came through, they had put an extra applicance down and charged me an extra £57, until I phoned up and had it removed <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/angry.gif" alt="" />

They do that sort of thing. They once rang me up to say thanks for transferring my electricity account to them, it will all be comong through soon. I pointed out the minor flaw in their stance, i.e. that I hadn't and didn't want to. They swore blind that I had, then said that my them wife had signed something for a door to door salesman. She was adamant that she had not. I reiterated that nobody had signed up very firmly, and took the guys name, saying that it this was a possible fraud he would be personally named in a joint action against him and Gritish Bas. They gave up.

I moved away from God's borough in 2004 and cancelled my utilities and so on. They mostly asked did I want electricity/gas/water/cable TV/phone at my new address, and I explained that I did not, it already had some, the house already belonging to my partner. After I moved the electricity people rang to "confirm" that they had trabnsfreerd my account, and the account for my new address would be switched to them on such and such a date. A similar consveration to the gas one took place, except the girl kept agreeing to "cancel the new agreement" and I kept saying she couldn't cancel it because there wasn't one. Perhaps a pedantic point but possibly important in law.

My partner had her mobile phone account switched to a different tariff. Someone rang her to offer it, and she said send me written details to consider. They just changed it, then the phone company said they couldn't change it back because it wasn't them who organised the switch..... can't see how that works in law.

Moral: trust no-one. Sign nothing. Read and check everything. Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you.

I remember a few years ago when this happened to a women and when she questioned it they told her that her husband had agreed it. The husband had been dead for a long while!

  • 2 weeks later...

I had a laughable experience with the Electric Company once. After recieving an exorbitant bill for a quarter(it would have lit up half of London), which was an estimate, they assured me it would be corrected on my next bill.

With bated breath(yeah right), i awaited my next bill. It arrived,,,,,0.00 quid, convenient huh? I never gave it another thought, 14 days later, threatening letter "If this account is not settled in the next 14 days, we will pursue legal means to collect the said amount."

On driving to my local office, i mwas told because i had not offered thye bill for cancellation by the computer. I still wonder what they would have done if i had ignored them!
