Canvey Island 4-0 Basildon Utd

More of a training match than anything of real competitiveness.

Goals from Nicky Rugg, Kevin Dobinson and a brace from Steve Corbell, one from the penalty spot sealed the win.

The whole team played well as a unit tonight, including all the Subs and barring any major knocks it sets us up nicely for Spurs on Monday! <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

Sorry, no photos from tonight.

Could have been 9 or 10 if it hadn't of been for the Basildon keeper. Match report should be on sometime tomorrow evening.

A decent work-out for the players tonight and certainly better than a training session, our superior fitness and general play made the game easier as time went on.

Well played to the Basildon keeper <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/applaus.gif" alt="" /> he will be fantastic when he grows up <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> and without him they would have been stuffed.

Great atmosphere again, good banter with the Basildon keeper, without him we could have had 8.

Dobbo's goal, pure class!!

I have never seen so many people laughing and joking and making comments about the positive feel about the place!!

I thought we looked a different team second half. First half we didn't seem to get going and got dragged down to their level. Nicky Rugg scoring regularly is a very good sign. He'll be a big asset this year.

Fantastic strike from Dobbo, an absolute rocket! The best goal so far this pre-season. <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/bow.gif" alt="" />

Corbel looked handy up front when he was pushed forward, could give us a new dimension and he seems to know where the net is.

Roll on the first game!! <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/bounce.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/bounce.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/bounce.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/bounce.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/bounce.gif" alt="" />

I am in two minds about corbell, he has some nice touches, but he seems to slow on the ball for me, i am not sure it is because he is in need of a rest or just how he plays, i agree with you benny, the first half canvey didnt play to well, there touches seemed to either be to powerful and hard to control or to soft. Yellow if you care writing the match report, i think the man of the match should go to the basildon goalie, what a fantastic performance he produced last night, it was like having a cat in goal and their number 12 seemed to be having a good game as well even though his shouting for the ball reminded me of a cockeral for some reason. Our boys played well and seem to gell really well, i think that stuart has improved over the games and can distribute the ball really well, hows about the next penelty he takes one, he is always up for it!!. Our defence and midfield seem to be solid, a few little errors last night, but nothing the boys cant handle. The strikers played out of their skins and again if it wasnt for that keeper we could of been easily 9-0 up. Keep up the good work lads and lets beat totenham.

I thought Corbell had a poor first half and I thought it would've been him that was subbed at half-time. He may just need a rest or he's saving it for when the real action starts. He didn't seem to link up very will with Bourne either, with Chris rarely sending the ball down the line to him.

Pushing him up front in the second half gave him improvement and with Lee Jay and Clyde on the wings he was getting a regualar service, plus the through balls from Batch and Dobbo.

I think at times in the second half though, when Basildon were counter attacking with a long ball clearance our midfield were too pushed forward and the defence had to react quickly - I'm so glad we've got Dave Kreyling! <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Hope Messiah's injury isn't too bad. Must've only been on the pitch for 60 seconds! <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

For someone to play bad and score two isn't bad though!! I'm sure he'll get better.

After watching the first half i was tempted to have a sleep second half but thank god i didn't. It was all action and Dobbo's goal was worth the entrance fee alone. Clyde coming on livened things up and he has surely got to start right mid for the first game.

It all looking good at the moment

I couldn't really pick out any weak link. Corbell played most of last season as a winger, but he is a versatile player and can play anywhere along the middle it seems. His free kicks are usually accurate as well as last night showed, could be the difference in some games this year.

I wouldn't say anyone was a weak link last night. It's not like Basildon really troubled us. Most of the football was played in their half and we had loads of shots on target from various different angles.

Does anyone know if Leon's substitution was tactical or had he picked up a knock?

I like Chris in that Ashley Cole type role, bombing forward over lapping with the left winger. This causes so many problems for the opposition defence, and Bourne has the pace and effort to get back and defend straight after.

Which was totally witnessed last night when he beat their man to the ball in our half, overtook him and still managed to get to the byline and put in a decent enough cross.

The thing with Chris Bourne is, i dont think he's disciplined enough to play left back as he always wants to get forward and if he plays left mid he's not going to get back. Also, he tries to do things to flash and hardly ever plays the easy ball. Saying that though, the lads got electric pace, something you just cant teach or gain.

Basically, I agree with Benny. I mean, I love Chris, but I don't think defending is really his forte. I like Lee Jay too and certainly wouldn't consider dropping him.

Though part of the reason I suggest Chris should be playing left mid is because of his display last night. I felt that more or less everything he did last night came off well - every time he went forward, he took the ball past players and his final ball was usually top notch too (resulted in the second goal). I think if he's playing midfield, there's more chance we'll see that, as he won't have to worry about defending.

Naturally, that poses a problem with Lee Jay.

That would be where Crow comes into it.

Lee Jay can play just as well on the right, as can Clyde play in the middle. The trouble posed then is who do you drop from Corbell, Dobbo and Edgar to fit Clyde in the middle, Jay on the right, Bourne on the left and Crow at the back.
