Absolutely pathetic today. Jim changed the team because he thought it was going to be a physical encounter. Why is he worrying about the other team? We should play our own game and let them do the worrying.

 

Regarding bad language at the game. Sorry, if you don't want to hear bad language don't go to a football ground. My boy is used to the language because even though he is only 7 he hears it everyday in the school playground and no he doesn't go to some rough school. Its everyday langauge i'm afraid.

Agree that you will hear it at a match but that does not mean that all clubs should not make an effort to cut it down. If we bury our heads in the sand the next problem will be something even more serious.

I try my best not to swear at Boro games cause I know we have many women and children there, and I definatley don't swear if I take my own family to the game.

Sorry THM, I feel that is a cop out. Yes, there is bad language everywhere in today's society but I am sure you don't scream "F***off" when standing right next to Callum. In the same way adults should show better judgement when kids are around.

my understanding is that the bad language wasn't the usual suspects behind the goal?

It is a fact there is swearing at football, and it tends to be more prevalant behind the goal. I know Mr Happy had the kids away from the middle of the goal in the first half and still could not escape the abusive language.

In my own opinion, I am not sure there is an answer, whilst there is football there will be swearing at games, but at least we can ensure that the chanting and songs are not abusive; after that it is down to parental choice

Not a cop out, just a personal opinion.

 

I never think about my language in front of Callum. My dad never swore in front of me and anybody who knows me knows my language is awful. As i said my boy hears far worse at school and in this day and age you will never be able to shelter your children from bad language. I dont make any effort in stopping my children from hearing it. I concentrate my efforts in explaining why the language shouldn't be used and why other words are better. Callum knows not to use language that he doesnt know the meaning of.

yes bad language is part of life and I also agree that VERY OCCASIONALLY it is thrown around the older kids school playgrounds but this is generally by kids who have picked it up from parents using it in doors or are in an environment where they continually hear it and know its wrong and use it to look big. My daughter copied this "fan" saying F*** O** as she wasnt any the wiser that it was bad language and probably assumed it was a chant. she is fortunate and is not subjected to this sort of language by us, family or friends and hopefully when she is older and does frequent this type of language she will know better than to use it!! As for not going to the games?? isnt the idea of a local team to attract families?? <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" />

If you don't want your kids to hear bad language,then simply stand anywhere in the ground APART from behind the goal.

 

Even though i don't agree with bad language,sometimes in the heat of the moment poeple might shout out 'F**k off' or even 'ref your a c**t'. The difference i find with a few fans from the oppo yesterday,is that they shout and scream at rival players in that way.That is a totally different kettle of fish altogether.

Right. So cannot stand behind the goal with my kids who enjoy standing there and whose company many fans enjoy. Very Little Miss Happy has even started off a few chants herself.

 

All I am saying is soem greater restraint is in order.

Only very occasionally? I hear it everytime I take my son to school and he is 7. Yes they are copying their parents but unless you can control every adult in the worlds language kids will pick it up. I'm a realist. I expect my son to hear it and therefore I know I have to explain it to him and why he shouldnt use it. But i know that he probably uses it when Im not there.

Can I also say that the point of local team is to attract locals. This does not just mean families.

If you dont want your kids to hear bad language I suggest you take them to watch something else. I've been to ice hockey a number of times and you dont hear any swearing there and that's great but sorry i just dont think you will ever get that at football with all the good will and effort in the world.

I dont know what school your son goes to but bad language is dealt with severley at VLMH school so again she does not frequent this type of behaviour..and being that she is only five I dont feel it necessary YET to have big discussions about this subject with her.. basically its down to restraint.. you yourself state that your son probably uses bad laguage at school however knows not to use it in front of you... could you and others not have the same restraints when other peoples children are around.. I see from the other threads the concensus is that if I dont like it I could either attend a different sport not stand behind the goal or just put up with it and allow my daughter to pick up this fowl abusive language.. how wonderfully democratic <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" />

Very disappointed still, having had time to digest Saturday's performance. Oops meant Monday!

 

No excuses necessary. In my opinion we (ETFC) had the better players and the stronger squad, but the wrong players played in the wrong positions. EFC took their chances and got the points. Penalty was harsh but you win some, you lose some. Second goal was very well taken.

 

Still don't understand why we had two "breaker-uppers" in the starting line up e.g. Fitzgerald, Purcell and only Black as a "creator". Very strange to drop Velandia completely after his recent performances. For me, Black and Velandia both need to start. Hunt disappointing again. Nyman and Smith must surely both be ahead in the pecking order?

 

We looked markedly better second half once Smith and Nyman came on, but had left ourselves too much to do. EFC defended deep and we didn't have much luck in front of goal, considering the number of quality balls that went into the box. But EFC deserved the 3 points.

 

We need a settled team and a settled formation. No more tinkering. This squad has plenty of goals in it, given a chance to play. We need to go for it and attack, not worry so much about conceding. Saturday team selection was much too defensive.

 

Let's see what happens at the next home game, as I think we will do well on our travels.

To be fair,is it democratic to impose one's own moral views on bad language onto some of those that stand behind the goal,especially when not standing near them would totally avoid the problem?

 

As i say,i don't persoanlly like it myself,but i accept that tempers flair and things are said in the heat of the moment.Thats football.Its only when swearing and threats are made towards opposition players or fans,that it becomes unacceptable in my eyes.

I'm afraid this performance showed yet again Jim's managerial deficiencies. Whenever we have what he considers a 'big' game he changes the formation and/or personnel, inevitably to a more defensive structure.

 

It happened in the run-in last year and cost us promotion. It also happened on occasions in the ESL.

 

It sends out the message "I'm not confident that we can win this game playing our normal game", it confuses our players and it gives the opposition a psychological boost.

Mr & Mrs Happy you can continue to live in your utopian world where people dont swear, crime isn't committed and drugs arent freely available near most secondary schools. I'll contine to live in the real world.

 

To be honest I have other things that I worry about more then Callum hearing a few rude words.

As soon as I heard the result I texted the Invisible Young Man (in impeccable language) saying that I bet JC has tinkered with a winning team again........................................

 

OK I only know what is happening second hand as I can't be there but this really has got to stop. If you think the other team is going to physical why stoop to their level, you just make it a 50-50? Surely it's better to pick better players than they have and keep the ball, and use it! (I do not suggest that EFC were/are over-physical).

Personally, though, I'd give your line-up nine and a half out of eleven (there's one I definitely disagree with and one that I'm 50-50 on). I'd have Hammatt in for one of Smith or Nyman and I might put Hunt ahead of Mackey.

 

I'm still not sure about Tickner but I don't think there's an alternative at present.
