Sad indictment on our society

Recommended Posts

Taken from my Edgware Forum

Whilst this is sad news I think it is just a clear sign of the times and an even bigger sign of the future of Edgware itself. You only have to look at the ethnic make up of the community now to see that a local side like Edgware have no future in the area and to be honest no future anywhere. Just outside the ground you have an indian place of worship, and the Sangam centre is just down the road. The area is not the as it was 5 years ago.

Burnt Oak, Colindale and Hendon are places for immigrants and foreigners, that is a fact now. Why is that a large number of people on the forum no longer live in the area? I moved out 4 years ago and would never go back and live there. There was a kid murdered outside the school last year!!! Nice area!!! The glory days of Edgware are finished, if we save it now, the fight will be lost next year or the year after. Its a sad fact of life but a clear indication on modern Britain.

My Reply

I full agree with those statements. I have said in the past if you were to go to the Boardwalk centre in Edgware and ask 100 people about Edgware Town FC, you would be lucky if just 10% knew where the ground was let alone that there was a team playing in the town!

No one has a sense of community anymore towns like Hendon and Edgware which back in the 60's/70's were buzzing are now decaying.

I have been thinking about a move away from the area which I grew up in Edgware/Hendon area, and this could be the final nail in the coffin that makes me leave. Living in the Hyde (junction of colindale/west hendon) I have seen the area decline in the 9 1/2 years living here. I want to settle down and have a family and I dont want them to grow up around here.

Right now I am ready to do all I can to help the club, that's if we still have club, but in the longer term I too shall no longer be around these parts.

Kingsbury Town have now become the asian run London Tigers, alienating any locals who have a followed Kingsbury in the past. Hendon WILL be the next to lose their ground and no doubt will go the same way as Edgware, thus losing another local side, and one with a far greater history then Edgware.

Wealdstone are dreaming if they think they will see themselves playing at the PEPF development in Cannons Park, its become a white elephant and the council hoped Barnet would take it off their hands, now even that seems like its fallen through.

Wstone wont survive without a ground for much longer, sharing at Northwood they are losing money hand over fist whilst Northwood themselves are still in deep financial trouble and the signs dont look good for their long term future.

Harrow Boro survive on poor gates, Wingate & Finchley survive in the Ryman 1 with worst gates then we were getting last season. They have a nice set up there, but they appear to only stay afloat thanks to some kind benefactors.

All in all the future for non league football in the North West London area looks bleak.

Only clubs with a large catchement area and no league clubs around them seem to flourish these days, with there being few exceptions to the rule.

Firstly i want to say i'm gutted that another non league club has folded and it does seem that area of London is suffering bad.

However, I don't see how the ethnic make up of an area has anything to do with a football club folding. People all over the world support football no matter what their race or religion. Somehow we have to tempt people from all backgrounds to come and see lower league teams but one of the main problems is saturation Premiership football. Sit in the pub, get pissed and watch Chelsea seems to be peoples preference.

In Slough there's a massive influx of Polish and we have already got one newly arrived Pole playing for us. Our job (which is made even harder but not having our own ground)is to get his friends and families and work mates to come along. Non League is a totally different experience - and one that won't leave you out of pocket.

The other problem is developers - football grounds, especially in land hungry London are a way or shareholders making a quick buck by building over another green space. Our planning laws need to be sorted so that community assets like pubs, football clubs etc are safeguarded.

Why are locals alienated from following the club? Silly name aside, the fact that asians are in charge doesn't make any difference does it?

Now then, i shall have to start calling you Jennifer grin

What party's that then? Now if I was to indulge in a political discussion on the AFCW guestbook, I would likely be branded a right wing nutter. Can't understand these people who are "left" or "right" - I just call it as I see it.

You'll have to talk me through what was so wrong with BR's original posting though.....

are you really that naive....try the mcmillan stadium on a match day with tizer and fizzy orange at the bar...if we ever have to go there again the away support will be 10...

of course it makes a difference and the fact that you cannot see it explains why NL football and the culture of when NL saturday comes in this country...are in terminal decline...

Clearly I must be. I'm not being flippant, but I don't see your point.

how long have you got....STFC are on the brink of extinction and BR is so far up his own jacksy writing blogs and journals and sending them to left wing newspapers trying to get a job he cannot see the harm he does in alienating potential saviours for his club....

his view is shallow and slanted in new labour political correctness to impress one's peers the same as yours is...

fortunately I don't have to as I don't have any...... grin

I can only assume, unc, that you're talking about a different dagenham to the one my family has lived in since the 1950's! Of course the fact that my Nan is the only "indigenous" Londoner in her street might be a rarity...

Right, I'm getting there I think. I'm now branded as a pinko leftie. Just as I was lambasted once on the AFCW guestbook for saying I agree with a lot of what Richard Littlejohn writes. So how does that stack up then? And I'm a Sun reader too grin

The worst thing about this country is that people are so blinkered and are petrified of anyone having an opposing view. I've not read BR's blog so can't comment on that. I've re-read his post and all I can see that you presumably don't like, is that he says the polish community should be encouraged to go to games. He's not calling for more immigration to get the crowds up!

My view is neither shallow, Old Isthmian's or given to impress anyone. It is my view. I'm neither left wing or right wing. Sorry about that.

And yet both Barking and Dagenham constituencies returned labour MPs at the last general election... [/quot

The BNP have several seats on the local council and I think they are the second biggest group on Dagenham council I would say that makes the area one of the BNPs strongholds I mean come on its not as though the BNP are likely to win a parlimentary seat anywhere ever

Seems like I opened up a right can of worms. I DONT blame losing our ground on imagrants, that would be dumb. I BLAME Harrow council who when in tory leadership voted 9-0 against planning going ahead, then when in Labour voted 5-4 in favour, with a £75000 'sweetner' paid from the developers to the council.

The 'imagrant' post was to merely show how the area has changed vastly over the last few years, and that how the football club is less important then the local branch of sainsburys in Edgware.
