The reshuffle in defence made us look much more solid, and I thought Baucutt and Alaile had good games either side of Humphrey and Bartley.

Gameo and Smith had their best game as a central midfield partnership, and Sheldon Sellears was exceptional down the right wing - my man of the match.

Not sure what Henderson was thinking with his two yellows, perhaps the most stupid sending off I have ever seen! What a way to let your team mates down.

As for Thommo's header, how unlucky was that! It was a great header which he got up a long way to connect with, just a shame he couldn't direct it an inch lower!

Onto Ricay on Saturday, another side that have seen a lot of changes over the summer. After this performance I think we can go into this game full of confidence and I think we'll claim the three points.

Another early goal made us play long ball once again in the first half which we're not very good at. I'd say over half of the long balls forward were aimed at Bellotti who was never going to win a header.

We started the second half much better just like on Tuesday night and created some early chances. However, the red card was a shambles of a decision and seemed to knock the wind out of our sails. Bartley reacted angrily to something that was said by Lovett and the two went head to head. From this the referee wasted no time in showing Bartley the red card, but then went to speak to his assistant about Lovett before letting him off.

Now bearing in mind that the two were head to head he must have seen the actions of both, and if he sends Bartley off he has to send Lovett off. The truth is that neither player aimed a headbutt at the other and yellow cards all round at most would have calmed the situation down. Having said that, if Bartley hadn't gotten himself involved in the first place the ref wouldn't have had to make a decision, so he needs to look at himself there. We had to play with 10 men for over half and hour and will now miss him for three matches, all needlessly.

Vickers did well in goal, it looked as though the shot took a deflection from where we were. Brightly can feel hard done by to have lost his place based on his two league performances so far, although he could have done better during pre-season. I suppose though that Arsenal didn't send Vickers to us to have him sat on the bench like we did with Asante from Southend a couple of seasons back (who incidentally scored in Bishop's Stortford's 2-1 defeat to Bath City on Saturday).

Next up we have three tough games with Lowestoft & Ricay at home before Bury Town away. All of the goals we have conceded so far have been in the first half, and in every match we have conceded in the opening 15 minutes. We need to come out of the blocks sharper, get the ball down and ensure that when we do get possession in midfield we don't give it away cheaply. Gameo and Smith are good players but their passing so far has been poor.

Ah well, I've expected to win the last three games and we have lost. Truth be told I'm not expecting anything from the Lowestoft game so hopefully it will work the other way around!

First half was a disappointment. They scored early on which seemed to knock us and make us play ultra defensively for the rest of the half. Spencer Bellotti seemed like he was tied to the half way line, and our tactic seemed to be to lump everything forwards to Simon Thomas, who to be fair had an excellent game. They scored a second but luckily Nashy pulled one back before the break.

Second half everything changed. We were pressing them high up the pitch and closing them down much quicker, and with this were forcing Cray into mistakes that they didn't make in the first half when they had all the time in the world to pick their passes. Simon Thomas and Spencer Bellotti both had headers which they should have scored, and Thomas also had a shot well blocked on it's route to goal.

Emeka had the ball in the net at the death following Ty Smith's free kick, but unfortunately the flag was up for offside.

Cray's keeper Andy Walker (or Andy W@nker as he shall from this point forwards be known) didn't cover himself in glory, swearing at the Canvey fans when the goal was disallowed. It had all been good banter until that point so it was a shame. Fortunately this incident did provide us with the moment when Powelly threatened to knife Walker...wow!

The referee was poor but equally so for both sides. He did however allow Cray to waste a huge amount of time throughout the match and then only added on three minutes at the end. He was poor when we had him at our place last season and hasn't improved.

As for our tactics, I would like to have seen us go for a more like for like replacement for Rio Bryan-Edwards. We ended up moving Humphrey from left back to centre back, Dumas from left mid to left back and put Jay Nash in at left mid. I've always thought that all of this moving players positions from one game to the next can't help. For example, Dumas had to totally change his mindset from attacking left winger to defensive left back. I would rather replaced RBE with either Alaile/Baucutt/Sands, left Humphrey at left back and chosen from Dumas or Nash at left mid.

The tough games keep coming with Lewes away and then Lowestoft & Billericay at home, need to get up and running sooner rather than later.

I was too far away to judge their penalty but those nearer have said that it was soft at best. If Thommo scores ours then we probably go on to win the game but it wasn't to be.

Thought we looked a bit slow to react at times and will need to be a bit sharper tonight against Cray to get off the mark.

I'm going for a 3-2 win for the Gulls, with our goals coming from Jay Curran, Spencer Bellotti and Ty Smith. Attendance 367.
