my old one was completely knackered, all the glass smashed and the zoom fell off into a lagoon. It was not under warranty but i am waiting for a new one to come through via the house insurance but they are taking ages, they phoned yesterday to ask some questions and said they will be putting the claim through but it could take up to 6 weeks.

I am thinking about just purchasing a cheap scope for the next few weeks but it probably isn't worth wasting the money for 5-6 weeks birding

UM - I had a look at ebay and there are quite a few on sale - but I do not know how the prices compare to normal prices. My own scope is now over twenty years old and really needs replacing - it has a zoom eyepiece, but it really only works at x20 - anything higher than that is too blurry.

UM - I forgot to ask - which scope had you got and which scope are you thinking of getting?

I am not at all keen on the two that are in the Rainham marsh centre. Trouble is, scopes are a real minefield when it comes to choosing one.

Would you go for a x20 eyepiece, or a zoom?

Would you go for a straight bodied one, or the kinked sort? (I prefer the straight ones, but have to admit that the other sort are easier to use - but not in a car).

Bayonet or screw fit?

When I was with the sociable plover a couple of years ago, there were some really fantastic scopes on show - only thing is, the owners were alongside most of them.

the RSPB scopes are not all that at all, although i did get a good view of the barnacle geese this morning with one.

The scope i am getting is a swarovski ats 60 with a 20-60x zoom lense, which i would never usually go for but with swarovski you know that the quality of the lense will enable you to get just as good views with 20 magnifaction or 60

Traditionally i have always preffered angled bodies but in all honesty i don't see difference in either, just what i am comfortable with.Screw fix is prefferable but same again i don't really mind.

Kowa do some very good scopes as well, opticron ones are not too bad especially for the price and nikon are good if you don't mind some odd looking scopes at times.

Never tried the ultravid by leica but have heard good things about them.
